Here is a quote to start, from our man Will: "Though I am not naturally honest, I am so sometimes by chance." This is really an evil book, don't let your kids see it, especially if you aspire to teach them cribbage. The Shakespeare quotes on honesty, thievery attempt to lift this book from the gutter, but only make it that much more scurrilous.

Cribbage is a noble card game played in pubs and other dives worldwide, and the players are called "peggers" from the method of scoring point by moving a wooden peg on the cribbage board.

Many of the cheats are ingenious ways of taking unto oneself more peg point than one is entitled to; my favorite--peg three or four MORE than you have scored. When your observant opponent says "You've pegged too many, go back one" you do so with pleasure. Ah, that's funny.

The problem with this book is that you can't give it as a gift to anyone else, and in fact, you probably should hide it under your bed. No, make that somewhere your spouse won't ever go. Because if she or he plays cribbage with you and sees this...

Very funny stuff, would work in any bar (except with experienced peggers who will clobber you, I'm sure, unmercifully if you do this.)

"I grant him bloody,
Luxurious, avaricious, false, deceitful,
Sudden, malicious, smacking of every sin
That has a name. "

Cribbage is not as well known and appreciated as it deserves to be. However, cheating is well known and, though much maligned, it is more widely practiced than it deserves to be. We are all practitioners or victims, or more likely, both. Professor Haseltine assures us that with patient perseverance an practice "Your conscience will dry and shrivel to that of a multi-term senator." Here we find the key to the noble purpose of the book, viz., not to "shrivel consciences" but to open eyes to the ways our elected officials dupe us daily. "Surely in vain the net is spread in the sight of any bird," says the biblical book of Proverbs. Professor Haseltine spreads the net in our view hoping by our awareness we will fall prey less often to unscrupulous practices. A dose of good tongue-in-cheek humor and quotes from the Bard help the medicine to go down. As for his knowledge of Shakespeare, which the author plays down, he taught for a number of years in the ACU English Department. And as for dealing with cheats, grading freshman term papers and hearing student excuses in his present position as Associate Dean in the College of Arts and Sciences make him a hard guy to fool. I give the book 4 ½ stars, clipping a star for excessive humility on the part of the author and for making his book to short.

This work is certain to earn the author a special place in the fiery depths of card-player hell. Clever and more then a little bit entertaining. A must have for any cribbage player with no regard for sportsmanship or moral standards of conduct. In short, a great little piece of work. Highly recommended.

It was a gift and was welcomed with laughter.
My friend then showed it to others and they liked the humor in it too.
