3.0 out of 5 stars Repetative and useless information
I gave this book 3 stars because some of the information was indeed valuable. But the first 100 pages were completely irrelevant. Its called how to choose the sex of your baby yet he speaks of what aristotle thought. Who cares? History is wonderful and all but is it worth 100 pages?

The repetition comes in the chapters where it talks specifically how to try...

What a well-written book! Reading Toni Weschler's "Taking Charge of Your Fertility" before I read this book helped in understanding the signs of fertility and proper charting of these signs.
In response to the reviewer who was upset that Dr Shettles advises going off the pill 6 months prior...her doctor is right, a woman may ovulate as early as one month after discontinuing the pill; this would allow her to successfully acheive pregnancy as early as her first cycle after coming off the pill. What it is VITAL for the reader to understand (by reading the preceding chapters and not just skipping ahead), is that Dr Shettles recommends waiting at least six months SO THAT A WOMAN'S CYCLE RETURNS TO A NORMAL, SOMEWHAT PREDICTABLE STATE. Only then, can she and her partner hope to practice natural sex pre-selection. Most of our physicians are only concerned with helping us to acheive pregnancy, be it of a boy or girl; any practicer of Dr Shettles' method should be thrilled to have either one...but if you'd like to swing the odds one way or the other READ THIS BOOK!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars This new 2006 edition very welcome!, November 12, 2006

This review is from: How to Choose the Sex of Your Baby: Fully revised and updated (Paperback)
It is great to have a new edition of this terrifically useful guide to sex selection which has been in use for many years. My husband and i used it four years ago to conceive a boy and have just succeeded in using the method for a girl. We first read about it in Family Circle Magazine and Reader's Digest some years ago. We now consider our family complete. The advice in this book is the best. Two other couples we know have used it successfully as well. Thank you Dr. Shettles!

5.0 out of 5 stars Worked for us, October 12, 2007
This review is from: How to Choose the Sex of Your Baby: Fully revised and updated (Paperback)
This particular sex selection method has worked for us three times. I was monitoring very carefully for ovulation each time. That is the key. We read the whole book before trying to concieve the first time. We both work in the medical field and the suggestions by Dr. Shettles made sense to us from a physiological perspective. We tried for a boy first just to see if it worked. Not only was I pregnant the first month, it was a boy. So we tried for a girl next. Same thing. Our third time we tried for a boy and got pregnant the first month with a boy. We want one more child and are hoping for a girl. We'll see. The bottom line with any sex selection method is that it has to make sense to you and you have to be willing to follow it closely, but most importantly be thankful when you have a child regardless of the gender. Any "natural" sex selection method only works about 80% of the time even when closely followed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome, January 19, 2007
This review is from: How to Choose the Sex of Your Baby: Fully revised and updated (Paperback)
It wasn't the most entertaining of books, but heck I didn't read it to be entertained. I wanted a girl and this was my last chance. We tracked for 4 months and we not only got pregnant immediately, but we have verified that we are expecting a girl in May. I have friends who tried the method, but not with the level of committment that it takes. They were unsuccessful and admitted to not following it precisely. So if you really want to choose the gender of your baby then it is worth the read and try. You never know.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent -very informative, January 15, 2007

This book is great. Indepth. Goes into history of sex selection and how it works now. I am going to try for a girl and will update again later. I currently have a boy (not by using sex selection) However, if you go through the steps on how to have a boy, it is accurate based on timing etc. Regarding the single star that this book has gotten, it is inaccurate. You have sex often when trying to have a girl to lower the sperm count (men have more male sperm, this lowers the male sperm and gives the female sperm a better chance) 2) regarding the pill, the doctors recommend you get your period atleast once. Inorder to properly select the sex of your baby, you must plan and have "practice" months to determine your time of ovulation-only then can you use sex selection. You can not do that in only one month---especially for a girl. and either way, I would want to wait atleast 6 months to make sure that all the chemicals and sideeffects of the pill are out of my system before trying for a baby.

5.0 out of 5 stars It Definitely Works!, January 19, 2007

Mom of Four (Long Island, NY) - See all my reviews
This review is from: How to Choose the Sex of Your Baby: Fully revised and updated (Paperback)
We have three wonderful boys but we still wanted a little girl to complete our family. I had read other books and understood that the sex of the baby is all in the timing in most cases. I bought this book, read every single page cover to cover and practiced all the things it said to do. I charted my cycle for 4 months and then we began trying. We did everything the book instructed us to do and I became pregant immediately after we started trying. A sonogram later confirmed the baby was a little girl and our dreams were fulfilled. This book definitely works if you are willing to follow all the instructions and not get lazy about what you need to do. Your chances of having a boy are greater then having a girl. Having a girl requires a little more effort to nail down the timing but the end result is well worth it. I would recommend this book to anyone trying for either a boy or a girl.

5.0 out of 5 stars Worked for me!!!, January 26, 2008
This review is from: How to Choose the Sex of Your Baby: Fully revised and updated (Paperback)
I found this book not only interesting but it worked for me! As the book mentions, trying for a girl is a little harder and since I had recently lost a lot of weight, my menstrual cycle had become a bit irregular. However, after months of tracking and months of trying (as the book indicates for a girl starting with a certain number of days prior to ovulation and bringing that number down if it doesn't work), I found the magic day. We found out through chromosome testing that our baby is a girl! We have 2 boys already and this addition really completes our family! I have recommended this book to all my friends who really want one sex or another.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, January 24, 2007

I felt that this book was for the most part an easy read. There were times that I felt that it was hard to stay with the writer, but mainly because I was anxious for the facts. My advice is be patient. If you do want to increase your chances for having either sex then you really need to read the whole book. Although you could skip ahead to the chapter that explains how to try to conceive each sex, but honestly you will be missing a bunch of helpful tips throughout the book. We are hoping it will increase our chances of the sex gender we'd like to have first this Spring! Be sure that you will be happy with either sex. Do NOT depend on this book to work miracles. The book merely tells you how to increase your chances of having either sex.

Good luck!

5.0 out of 5 stars IT WORKED!!!!, August 16, 2010

This review is from: How to Choose the Sex of Your Baby: Fully revised and updated (Paperback)
I was referred this book by a friend of my sister-in-laws. I was turning 40 and we already had a beautiful boy then 18 months and we really wanted a baby girl since we only wanted two children. I was getting older! I told my husband we had a 50/50 chance it would work so why not go for it! The book was very straight forward, easy to read and the science MADE SENSE. I tracked for 5 months and on my first try, got pregnant, 2 1/2 days before I ovulated. IT WORKED! We went in for my 20 week ultrasound and jumped for joy. We now have a beautiful baby girl - 6 lbs 15 ozs who is just an angel. We are done!! If you do the work, track and follow the specific instructions there is a great chance of conceiving a child of the sex you prefer! Good luck! Thank you Dr. Shettles!

5.0 out of 5 stars Mom of adult kids, February 4, 2011
This review is from: How to Choose the Sex of Your Baby: Fully revised and updated (Paperback)
I bought this book 22 years ago. At the time we had 2 little girls and we wanted a boy. I followed the book, and in the first month we conceived a little boy. He is now 21 years old. The book not only gave us our son...it also taught me so much about my own body. If you want to increase your chances on the sex of your baby, I would highly recommend reading this book from cover to cover. Make sure and study the different techniques. It really does make sense once you actually understand how your body works. I have 2 siblings. They both have all girls. We were the only ones that had a boy and the only ones that used this book!
