5.0 out of 5 stars The Last Resort
This is a good John Hughes-ish novel. It's written well, practically perfect in a way that sounds so realistic that it's pretty eerie. Maybe not really eerie, but still. It's about love and make-overs.

This would have been a pretty good book had there been more to it. I mean, it had the basis of a pretty good plot! I think it sped by way too fast! So, basically, beautiful, popular hottie Nicole is expecting Brad Selden to ask her to the prom and for them to be one of the top 12 and one of the last four couples to walk out in the Grand March. This is a good John Hughes-ish novel. It's written well, practically perfect in a way that sounds so realistic that it's pretty eerie. Maybe not really eerie, but still. It's about love and make-overs.

In this story of star-crossed lovers, we meet the preppy Nicole who's popular, school-spirited and fashion friendly. Nicole is part of the elite clique at school, where everyone lives in nice houses and their parents are always out. Our other protaganist is the grungey Chase, who's antisocial, idealistic and angsty. Chase is part of a bored group of Ninetendo, computer-chatting buds who seem consist of a designated driver and a geeky idiot. They've been living next-door since they can remember but they aren't friends anymore, of course.

The story doesn't end here.

It all begins when Nicole is waiting for the ever-so popular jock, Brad Selden, to ask her to the prom. She waits by the phone, hints to him and flirts but nothing happens. She feels that all is hopeless until--BAM!--he finds someone else. And it happens to be Chase's ex-girlfriend, Dulcie. Of course, Nicole is thinking "What the H***?" while Chase is confused himself. Then Nicole gets an interesting idea--why doesn't she and Chase go?

Oh about no . . . says Chase. But Nicole gives him a complete American Eagle/Abecrombie make-over that sends Chase's army cargos out in the Dumpster. Soon Chase is a hot preppie, being Nicole's little puppet and soon her "love slave." But what happens when Nicole actually starts to LIKE Chase?

Hmm, the plot thickens. Typical teen story, eh? Well, too bad, because this was an amazing potrayel of modern teenage life filled with friendship, cliques, hopes, failures, and of course, love. Another Todd Strasser novel mixed with John Hughes's ideas.

***** Five stars! At first it was confusing, going back and fourth through the different people but it was worth it! I (20 & single) had a sensational time reading it to my neice (who is 10)!

Thank you Todd, for writing this extremely comical approach to a typical teenage dilemma! I'm surpised that it hasn't had more publicity, i recommend this novel to every teenager who isn't afraid to admit that they would love to be Nicole or Chase secretly. Read this book.

3.0 out of 5 stars Left me with NOTHING., July 5, 2011

This would have been a pretty good book had there been more to it. I mean, it had the basis of a pretty good plot! I think it sped by way too fast! So, basically, beautiful, popular hottie Nicole is expecting Brad Selden to ask her to the prom and for them to be one of the top 12 and one of the last four couples to walk out in the Grand March. The Grand March is before Prom when all the parents are in the cafeteria watching everyone come in walking on this red carpet. The last 12 people to come into the Grand March are most popular. So she expects Brad to ask her to prom. But instead, he asks, Dulcie Wheaton, a girl who supports a lot of acts like loosening restrictions on morning after pills that can cause miscarriages, to prom claiming they're "in love." So, of course, Nicole is pretty upset and freaking out that her whole prom is ruined and whatnot. So she gets Chase her neighbor and long time friend to take her to prom. She know's he probably a hunk under his long hair and spends the remainder of the time before prom hunkifying him! I didn't really like the ending all that much...It felt incomplete... Overall, I guess the book was okay. Not quite thorough though.

3.0 out of 5 stars a bit disappointing, April 15, 2011

Though it was what I expected: an easy read, the story was sweet but fell a little flat towards the end. The depth behind the characters was plausible, but while the book is predictable from the beginning the end doesn't quite live up to what you wish would happen with the characters.

3.0 out of 5 stars How I created my Perfect Prom Date, July 6, 2009
I thought this book was very good; however, it ended as though there would be a sequal and there is not. The book is very good up until the end when it leaves so many questions unanswered

3.0 out of 5 stars Becoming Popular, June 9, 2007

Nicole, a very popular senior at her high school, has a serious problem. She thought everything was all arranged for the prom, only to find out that the guy who was supposed to ask her ended up asking someone else instead. The tradition at her school is for each couple to walk a red carpet on their way into the prom, so parents can gather and take pictures and videos of them walking in. The most popular couples are always at the very back of the procession. With Brad at her side, Nicole would have been certain to be in one of the last four places in line. But without him, everything is a toss-up.

So Nicole decides that she will have her next-door neighbor, Chase, take her to the prom. Her only problem will be giving him a complete makeover in time to show everyone at school that he is good enough to be in one of those last places with her.

Chase, for his part, doesn't care much about popularity. He and his two best friends aren't popular but they aren't really bothered by that. He does like Nicole, though, and when the girl he really likes, Dulcie, decides to go to the prom with Brad, Chase is ready to accept Nicole's invitation. But will their plan to make Chase popular before the prom really work?

I liked the alternating points of view; it made it easier for me to understand the motivations of the two characters. I also liked that the end of the story didn't work out exactly as anyone had planned.

I didn't like that the situation with Ray worked itself out so easily. I also didn't like the conversations between Chase and his dad, in which his dad refused to admit he'd used drugs.

This book was a breezy, enjoyable look at high school popularity. Its very funny and really captures the trials and tribulations of navigating high school. The two main characters are both likeable and the other characters are also nicely drawn. It's a lot of fun to read!!
