Grade 5-9 Asimov's lucid explanation of the atmosphere will aid comprehension of it among upper elementary and junior high students. First he surveys simple early experiments which proved the existence of air. Then he describes the experiments which proved the existence of atoms, the density of air and the discovery of oxygen, nitrogen, hydrogen and the rare gases, and much more. Finally, there is a simple explanation of why, in our solar system, seven of the planets and one satellite have atmospheres and of what they are composed. Names of scientists and new scientific words are introduced with the phonetic spelling; meanings are given for Greek and Latin roots. Excellent diagrams, especially of the experiments, help clarify the text; however, the black-and-white illustrations are not as essential to readers' comprehension. Simple vocabulary and sentence structure, as well as the author's ability to explain the subject clearly make this an informative, rewarding book.
