Grade 5-8 The history of scientific knowledge about blood from 400 b.c. to the middle of the 20th Century. Asimov includes information about the heart, circulation, cells, platelets, and plasma as well as short biographical sketches of Hippocrates, Galen, Harvey, and other medical greats. Black-and-white drawings help to clarify the text. This informative, readable book answers questions that may spur young readers on to further study. The conversational style of writing makes use of a mixture of first-, second-, and third-person pronouns and a frequent use of asides. Parenthetical pronunciation aides that accompany difficult and easy words may distract some readers. . . . Blood explains blood historically and medically, and it will update collections that currently hold Weart's Story of Your Blood (Coward, 1960; o.p.) and White and Lietz' Secrets of the Heart and Blood (Garrard, 1965; o.p.) . It will not lend itself to browsing as easily as Ward's Heart and Blood (Watts, 1982). Andrea Antico, Aurora Hills Middle School, Colo.
