From School Library Journal
Grade 4-6-- A presentation of the basics on lasers in a brief, readable format. It is typical of the series and offers no surprises. Covering the development of lasers, Asimov describes electromagnetic waves, the history of their discovery, radiation, energy, and the preliminary development of masers (more primitive variations of lasers that produce microwave radiation) before going into the development of true lasers. The closing section describes current and potential applications of lasers, including astronomical uses, laser printers for word processors, medical/surgical applications, compact discs, fiber optics, and holography. Given the proliferation of books on this topic, this one is hardly an essential purchase, but as an attractive, up-to-date, and familiar volume, it will be useful for libraries in which this series has proved popular. --Jeffrey A.
