5.0 out of 5 stars David Wilcox a true American treasure
I first heard David's music back when our local NPR station used to play music during the day. Whenever David's songs would come on the radio - I would stop whatever I was doing and give it my full attention. This was back in 1989. For some reason, it took me 10 years to buy this CD. I discovered it at a music store by accident and felt like I'd run into an old friend...

2.0 out of 5 stars Different strums for different chums, I suppose...
I'm a folk and singer/songwriter fan from way, way back, (Woody Guthrie was still alive, for instance, although too ill to perform or record) and this is the second David Wilcox CD I've owned. I feel the same way about both albums. He is competent and pleasant, but none of the tracks, at first or second hearing, jump out at me and say "You've got to hear this again right...

4.0 out of 5 stars Boy Loses Girl, Finds God, July 7, 2005

Ham On Wry (Decatur, GA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: How Did You Find Me Here (Audio CD)
"How Did You Find Me Here" is like a wind-up clock that runs down before it gets to the end. But boy, those first six or seven songs are as strong a lineup you're gonna get from a singer-songwriter. Wilcox is rightly compared to James Taylor and John Gorka, but he could also be compared to the early Bruce Cockburn, another Christian songwriter that an atheist could listen to without taking offense. The title song sounds like an encounter with a lover, but it's really about God. "Eye of the Hurricane" is on my top ten list of great songs of all time. "Language of the Heart," though mightily sentimental, is heartfelt and touching because it gives a male point of view often reserved for women (Will you still love me tomorrow?). "Rusty Old American Dream" is one of the few fun songs on the CD, and uses a common Wilcox device of running an extended metaphor or "conceit" throughout the length of the tune. "Jamies Secret" uses the tune of the folk classic "Lord Maxwell" to grieve for a lost friend. "Saturday They'll All Be Back Again" is the best song about cruising in a small town you'll ever hear. Okay, that's enough - just thinking about these great songs makes me want to listen to them again.

I first heard David's music back when our local NPR station used to play music during the day. Whenever David's songs would come on the radio - I would stop whatever I was doing and give it my full attention. This was back in 1989. For some reason, it took me 10 years to buy this CD. I discovered it at a music store by accident and felt like I'd run into an old friend I hadn't talked to in a long time. Now, years later, I've played this CD many, many times. It's one I play in the car in the evenings when I've got a long drive to make. Or if I'm at home feeling a little lonesome, David's music soothes my heart. There's something about being in the semidarkness, alone with David's voice that seems so perfect. I've heard that David's guitar playing is so exquisite because he "plays under, over and around the frets". All I can say is that his playing feeds my longing for awesome acoustic guitar music. I hope you'll give this CD a listen and that you'll also experience the emotional response that I do everytime I pop it in my CD player, light the candles and sit back with a sigh. Enjoy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Special Stuff!, May 17, 2000

I would definitely consider this album (which I was lucky enough to have a travelling friend bring back for me from the States back in 1989) to be one one of the very finest albums, both lyrically and musically, to come from any singer-songwriter. Suberb lyricism combined with a refined guitar sensibility akin to Nick Drake.Wonderfully focused song-writing steeped in spirituality with a keen folk sensibility. As a vocalist Wilcox is often compared to the great James Taylor; listen to this CD and you will find that "Great" is an accolade that should be applied to both David Wilcox and this magical album. Of the many wonderful songs on the album, "Language of the Heart" is probably my favourite. I have recorded it myself and sung it many times in concert and to loved ones. Very special stuff.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Greatest Ever!!, October 8, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: How Did You Find Me Here (Audio CD)
A friend of mine turned me onto Wilcox about 5 years ago, and since then I have not listened to anything else! No one comes close to his musical talent. I also play guitar, and after I purchased his instructional video and songbook, I was able to play his music down to the awesome open tunings! Since then, I only play Wilcox because not only are the words so full of meanings but the guitar is SO much fun to play! Since I have started playing his songs, my guitar playing has improved by 100%!! If there is one collection of CD's to have, Wilcox is the only one you need. BUY EVERY CD HE HAS PRODUCED, YOU WILL BE GLAD YOU DID!

5.0 out of 5 stars "How Did You Find Me Here?" is music with meaning!, December 14, 1998
This review is from: How Did You Find Me Here (Audio CD)
If you haven't listened to David Wilcox you should walk, run, or speed to your favorite music store to pick up this album. Wilcox' guitar, his comfortable voice, and his meaningful lyrics won't let you go. "Eye of the Hurricane," "Jamie's Secret", and "How Did You Find Me Here" are unforgettable. Wilcox' music is for those tired of pop music with continuously repeating lines.

5.0 out of 5 stars Timeless DW, April 3, 2006

This review is from: How Did You Find Me Here (Audio CD)
Actually, I'd give this CD 6 stars on a scale of 5. It is just that good...and it is simply timeless David Wilcox.

I was first introduced to David's music almost 20 years ago...
I've been a fan ever since. This CD in particular is one of my all time favorites.

His singing is great. His guitar work impeccable. The songs are well crafted and speak volumes. I never tire of listening to this CD. I never tire of telling new friends about this CD in particular is on my all time favorites. If they don't seem too interested, I give them a copy of it and once they listen they typically are converted to a rabid fan. Funny how that works.

The messages in these songs are more of what the world needs. The topics of dreams, goals...life....These are gentle songs....yet, life is exciting in them...

If you want well crafted songs, done well...songs that evoke deep feelings, and inspire...I invite you to enjoy this CD over and over again...

5.0 out of 5 stars Still amazing after all these years..., July 24, 2006

This review is from: How Did You Find Me Here (Audio CD)
I first heard David's voice and music when I was 7 years old (back in 1990). I remember listening to "Eye of the Hurricane" in my living room (on cassette tape), not really knowing what the song was about, but still loving the guitar work and his voice. I also remember trying to sing the lyrics to "The Kid" while on the playground in elementary school...even then I identified with the line "I'm the kid who always stared out the window..." I too was a dreamer, and David made me feel like it was all right.

Through the years, I've grown to love different songs on the album for different reasons. When I became a Christian, I identified especially with the sentiments of the title track. When I went through a hard break up, I played "Common as the Rain" over and over, taking comfort in the line "The time we had was magic, and the love was not in vain/And fallin' down's as common as the rain."

I have never tired of his voice, or this album. It is one of the few consistently good albums out there, which I feel is rare. Unfortunately, I have yet to find another album of his that I enjoy to this degree. Buy this...you'll never regret it! May it stay with you for years to come...

5.0 out of 5 stars David captivates his listeners with this CD, June 3, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: How Did You Find Me Here (Audio CD)
"Wow!" is all I could say the first time I listened to this CD. The melodies captured consist of acoustic guitar and a rich baritone voice. The clear notes of the guitar and lack of overproduction clear the way to hear every word of every song. David is a very "feeling songwriter." He captures a feeling in the music he composes and reinforces it in the words he sings. A whole range of emotions is conveyed and the listener is captivated. If you like James Taylor's greatest hits, you'll love this one. When asked what he listened to when he went home, James responded, "David Wilcox!" If you want a taste of Dave, this is an excellent first step!

5.0 out of 5 stars Dave's Best, September 9, 2003
This review is from: How Did You Find Me Here (Audio CD)
If I had to create a top ten album list from my collection (over 1000), this CD would definitely be near the top of the list. The songs here are so achingly real that on at least one song, you'll wonder how Dave knows your life so well. For me it was "Saturday Night They'll All Be Back Again." I can remember the longing I felt to do "something" in high school and the contained prowling it led to. For me it was up Riverside and then back down Central, over and over again. The song captures the atmosphere so completely that every time I hear the tune I'm immediately transported back 20 years.

The rest of the album is like that too. Powerfully real, almost traumatically so at times. Each song takes you to a place and immerses you there, telling the story so well that you can feel the laughter and taste the tears. Many of the songs go deep below the surface and seem to have multiple meanings. A great example of this may be the title track which may speak to the redemptive quality of pure relationships but may also point to the artist's encounter with God on the eve of his baptism.

I can't recommend this album highly enough. I play it for ever one I know and most end up buying a copy. It belongs in your collection; really, it does.

5.0 out of 5 stars My first David Wilcox CD!, May 19, 2000
This review is from: How Did You Find Me Here (Audio CD)
I heard "Eye of the Hurricane" on the radio one day and had to hear more. Bought this CD for the one song only to find so many more that would become a huge part of me. Went on to buy every CD that David published and always look forward to the next.

Every song on this CD is amazing. It's the kind of music that fits any moment. Listening to the words and stories transport you to different places, usually in your own past.
