This book is a great resource for someone looking to learn more about digital photography. It is especially helpful if you have a camera that is more than just a "point and shoot" and can change your settings manually. The chapters are very well organized by topic and are filled with professional tips for getting the most out of your camera. Everything is explained in language that an inexperienced photographer can understand, and the text is accompanied by many full-color illustrations. While many other books that purport to be overviews of digital photography devote a lot of pages to "post-processing" images with software (like Adobe Photoshop), this book focuses almost entirely on the art of composing and taking good pictures.

I had spent many hours in the book stores reading and looking over digital photography "How to" books. When I happened on David Huss's book it did not take me very long to realize that this was the book I had been looking for. Easily read. Honest advice. Many "Digital Photography" books devote large sections to photo editing programs. Well how about getting a handle on how to take satisfactory digital pictures first. Only the last two chapters out of a total of 20 chapters are devoted to photo editing. More than enough for the average "point and shoot" person. If you find the manual which was provided with your digital camera daunting and confusing with a very long and steep learning curve, get this book. You will be doing yourself a big favor and you will be glad you did.

After reading the manual for my new Panasonic FZ7, I knew I was destined to stay in "simple" mode unless I gave myself a crash course on the basics of digital photography. Note: this was my first digital camera purchase, so the only thing I knew was how to spell f-stop! I spent a Saturday morning in Border's, going thru a host of books, most of which made my head spin. But this one was different, so I raced back to my PC to place the order.

Once settled down in the comfort of my living room, I lost all track of time. Reading this book is like having a shoot-the-breeze conversation with a super-knowledgeable friend. I placed my camera on a tray next to me, opened my manual to one of the last pages to see the full list of "specifications," and by the end of the day, I actually KNEW what the assorted features meant. I now actually comprehend
--- how to manipulate AWB (average white balance),
-- EV (exposure compensation), choose aperture-priority (f-top settings)
-- ... or shutter-priority (speed of picture taking),
-- ISO (keep it at 100, with occasional moves to 200),
-- how to get to and mentally digest the histogram
and every other feature of this high-end camera. Most importantly, I now understand the why! The killa? I'm actually taking darn good pics now with the MANUAL feature!!

Color pictures appear on just about every page, with the associated text pinpointing which feature caused the result. Many are good vs bad pics, along with thorough explanations related to each. You won't find the cryptic details directly under every picture itself (i.e., ISO, f-stop and speed-- that style is used in "The Birdwatcher's Guide to Digital Photography," which only **NOW** makes sense to me)); that info is GENTLY provided in such a fashion that you grasp it, FULLY, prior to moving on to the next chapter. That would be sufficient, but the author also provides countless "Pro Tips," providing guidance for trickier lighting/exposure situations and the like.

Bottom-line: this budding birdwatcher finds this book to be a sho-nuff keeper! I've even purchased a tripod, thanks to the tips presented in this text re what to look for re that purchase. I now know to toss the occasional over-exposed pic which can't be saved via computer editing, but to keep the underexposed guys. And, when I point my camera at the birdfeeders in my backyard (through the patio door glass) and see a funky histogram reading, I now know precisely what trick to employ to get the focus needed. I've gone from deleting most pics to being able to keep the vast majority, thanks exclusively to this book. Simply stated, this book delivers, in a stlye destined to be retained. I highly recommend it, as it's proven priceless to me.

I bought this two months ago along with my first digital camera. The book really helps everyone to be able to shoot much better photos. The chapters deal with just about all aspects of shooting in many different types of location, lighting and subjects.

My photos have significantly improved. I took 70 pictures this weekend, and was able to "keep" 53 of them. My average would normally have been much less. In addition, because the photos were better, I only needed a very short time to run them through Photoshop to clean them up.

Definately an excellent purchase, and getting the "right" photo first time saves hours in front of the computer screen!

Highly recommended.

This book is easy to read and presented in a fashion that does not bore you nor speak above the average person. It is a good book for beginners to intermediate photographers. Great photos that depict what the author is talking about. This is a quality book that should help the novice photographer take much better pictures, it will even remind the forgetful on some of the basics and advanced thinking and practises of taking a great photo.

It's 2011, and I just got around to reading this book purchased four or five years ago. Should have read it sooner.
Digital Photography by Dave Huss is a bit long in the tooth now with rhapsodizing about film cameras and feeling thrilled that his camera actually has a fireworks setting. We also learn here that one's PC should have at least 256 MB of ram, a laughable number today.

Despite some dated information like references to Jasc Paint Shop Pro and Photoshop Elements 2, there's still plenty of useful information her for the new digital camera user or the veteran picture taker like me who forgets photography information almost as fast as he can read it.

Some information withstands the test of time, however, and much of the information about picture taking strategies in various lighting conditions still holds true today. I also found the information about post processing very helpful even with references to older comuter programs. The sample photographs included in the book are excellent and help reinforce the text.

As a used book for some of the sub one dollar prices listed here on Amazon, this book could be a bargain for someone willing to sift through some of the older references. If you blame all your bad pics on the camera like I do, read this book before selling your camera.

I thought this book was very well written and very easy to read, but it is for the absolute beginner. If you know how to use your camera to take photos in differnt lighting situations (you know when to use your flash) then i think you would find that you are abit beyond this book.

This book is great. I love photography and sort of fell into the professional side of the business recently and this book is great. I have a friend that helps me that is a retired professional photographer and a lot of the tricks that he has taught me are listed in this book. Great buy if you want to learn a lot about the digital side of photography, professional or point and shoot!

I was looking to learn a bit about using my digital camera, and this book filled the bill. I recomend it to anyone who wants to learn digital protography, including taking photos and retouching them.

If you are like me you can't absorb everything you read, but enjoy a book that gives more info each time you read it. This book is great for the beginner and novice in photography, especiall digital photography. Repetitive but after a while I get it!
