Look no further. Goodbye confusion. This book offers step by step instructions on just about everything ranging from money mannagement to home maintenance to personal care to gardening. It's refreshing to find 1001 different tasks and skills explained in such basic fashion. I like the 1-5 scale of difficulty "hammers" which highlight for a reader how hard it might be to complete a project. For example; carving a turkey = 3 hammers; caring for silver = one hammer and hitting a home run= five hammers. So stop procrastinating, get the book, roll up your sleeves and tackle that long overdue "list" of unfinished projects.

For each suggestion on how to do that task, it gives tips to make that job easier. For some task it gives you a list of things you need or a warning note about that specific task. On some topics, it gives charts so you can compare such as common/popular breeds of cats or dogs. The index of the was easy to follow if you wanted to look for a specific topic.

The book gives basic info on a lot of how-to projects. Sometimes it does get a little basic but overall I thought it was great. THe tips in the book are awesome. I gave it to a college student who absolutely loved it. Its probably a handy book to keep at anyone's house.

How to do just about everything is a great general reference book if you want want to learn many of the basics of life. Another great thing is that the title shows honesty, it includes "just about" anything. I thought EHow did a wonderful job with this guide.

One of the best compilations of expert advice ever assembled into ready-to-use instructions! Veterinarians cover "How to Introduce Dogs and Cats" while psychologists give tips on "How to Be a Better Listener" and financial advisors guide readers on "How to Calculate Your Net Worth" and much more. This book is published by Simon & Schuster as part of its reference category--a great addition to their stellar line up. Editor-in-Chief of the book is the 30+ year how-to editorial veteran Bill Marken, former Editor-in-Chief of Sunset Magazine and author of multiple books, including Gardening for Dummies. Hats off to Marken and his team of 150+ experts for creating an enduring 600+ page reference guide which is sure to become a classic. Great idea, great expertise, great guide! Thank you!

however, after purchasing this book at a garage sale, I placed it on the shelf and forgot about it...until...

I needed to know how to rewire a vintage lamp. "I'll bet the book doesn't have that kind of information," I thought, but yes, yes it did. Now my whole family thinks I'm a genius, because I know how to rewire lamps. Was it simple? Sure it was. Nothing to it, to be honest, but it is something I didn't know how to do before.

Now, take my toilet, for example; the tenants had flushed something unmentionable, and I wanted to know how to snake it without getting a Plumber involved (and, at what stage to involve a Plumber) - problem solved. Easy as can be.

If it involves less than 10 steps, and if you think you could easily "Google" the same information, it's in the book.

In other words - could you find this same information on the net? Yes, you could. Is it handy to have in the book? Yes, it is.

The book isn't meant to tell you the cheapest route to China, or how to land the woman of your dreams, or how to gain diplomatic immunity, but if you're not sure how to go about getting a passport, it's a good tool.

Having said that, the "sister website" is www.ehow.com and you might be able to find a lot of the same information there, or at google.com.

This is bound to be a classic--this book covers everything you need to know about the basics of life (and then some). The content ranges from cooking to fitness and from relationships to home repair. The format is excellent--simple step-by-step instructions which are simple to follow. The table of contents, the index and all the cross-referencing makes finding what you need a cinch. I bought one for every member of my family (and one for myself)! Enjoy!

This book is practically useless. The instructions it gives are so vauge and obvious it must think you are an idiot. I wont say its completely useless, with 1001 entries I'm sure you can find a couple of pieces of usefull information in the massively thick and heavy book. 98% of its entries are uninformative, and vauge descriptions of what you either already knew or could easily figure out. I wouldn't wish this book on my worst enemy. Oh wait my in laws bought it for me for my birthday, Makes sense huh? ;)

Seriously though, I have to wonder if the people who rated this book highly really use it? And if so what do they use it for? I'd like to know.

I had gotten this book from the library before I bought it.I enjoyed it so much , that I desided to buy it . It has tons of information ,besides

being interesting to read ! It is a book everyone should own.

I needed information on how to settle a claim on my own after a car accident. This book gives very little information about any of its topics. I eventually found Car Accident Secrets at http://www.caraccidentsecrets.com which had an over 50 page book with Forms and Step by Step explanations.

That book helped me save over $3700.00 on lawyers fees and is an awesome guide before or after you have an accident.

This book is just too simplistic which I should have expected, When so many topics are covered in one book it must be really hard to be very descriptive. I should have known better.
