Heartfelt applause!,

I absolutely LOVE this book! The loving way that these two wonderful men compare and contrast the major religions of the world is beautiful. I think it should be required reading for children AND adults! I ordered several copies to give as gifts to many young people in my life. I can't wait to share this informative and thought provoking book with them. What an incredible step towards tolerance and embracing the different ways we all worship God. Thank you Mssrs. Gellman and Hartman, you have truly blessed us with this book.

It delivers what it promises to be. Very interesting and very well written. Provides answers to important questions regarding religion. An objective look at world religions. Very impressive in terms of upholding and respecting other religions.

Easy to Read and Understand,

This review is from: How Do You Spell God? (Paperback)
The book is highly recomended for all persons from ages young till adult. The book gives a description of all the 6 major religions and other religions as well and it compares and contrasts all the similarities and differences. Really comes into my mind why Christians, Muslims and Jews are 3 separate religions eventough the basic origin is very much similar, i.e.the notion of Heaven and Hell, the belief in One superior being, Places of worships (Church, Mosque and Synagogue), Holy books (Bible, Quran and Torah)..etc.

This review is from: How Do You Spell God? (Hardcover)
This book goes into details about the different religions of the world. It describes how they are different but what makes them the same. This book does a good job informing the readers with out including bias remarks or views from one religion of another.

Serious factual errors,
This review is from: How Do You Spell God? (Paperback)
This book is somewhat useful as an overview, but it contains some serious pernicious errors. I understand that, for a certain audience, it serves to simplify things, but this goes beyond simplifying to outright distortion. In describing Hinduism, for example, they say that Shaivites accept the caste system while Vaishnavites reject it. This is not simply an over-generalization- it's just not correct, and one wonders where the authors got their information. In describing the history of Christianity, the authors claim that the Orthodox Church split away from the Catholic Church because the Ecumenical Patriarch wanted to have the same powers as the Pope. Again, this is not a mere oversimplification, this is outright false. With stuff like this, I think people trying to seriously educate kids in world religions should steer clear of this book.

Easy, Thoughtful Introduction to Major World Religions,
This review is from: How Do You Spell God? (Paperback)
This book takes an elegantly simple approach to explaining the differences and similarities among world religions. I used it to teach church school to middle schoolers, but have also used it as a reference when I need to understand differences among the major persuasions. Direct and light-hearted, it is an excellent treatment of a subject we could all benefit from understanding better. Written by a rabbi and a Catholic priest.

Looks good at first glance,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: How Do You Spell God? (Hardcover)
Just reading this book alone, it seems very informative and sounds good. But on one of the few things I already know about, they write incorrectly that all major religions agree that "how we act is more important than what we believe". One of the authors is supposed to be Christian, and should know that major parts of Christianity say faith is more important than works. If they don't get that one thing that I know about right, how can I trust them on the other stuff they write?

This book is misleading and the authors are uneducated,
By
This review is from: How Do You Spell God? (Paperback)
The authors of this book are completely lacking in religious knowledge when stating facts quoted throughout this entire book. This book is completely misleading. Speaking on behalf of my own religion, this book contains an incredible amount of errors. If this book has this many errors about my own religion, how can I possibly trust the validity of the facts for the other religions? I do not give a single credit to the validity of this book. This book is simply trying to spread a message that if you do good, you'll be fine. It is a feel good book that wants people to believe that anything they believe and anything they do is ok. This may be a convenient way to live because it takes all accountability off of a person, but do you really want to risk the fate of your eternity in order to do whatever you want right now? Do not treat this book as authoritative. It is clearly lacking in its facts and truth.
It makes me wonder...are they purposely trying to mislead people because the people reading this book are probably not of their faith? On page 2, it states, "We don't want all religions to melt down into one big religion." This is a clear message that the authors exclude other believers. I'm not buying the flimsy statement that "this would be boring." Moreso, I believe that they are indeed a very exclusive religion. How can they portray another religion in a good light, when they clearly don't want to be a part of that religion? Pg. 3 states, "The main thing is to do good stuff and not to worry so much about where it comes from." In some religions, if you do this, you will spend eternity in hell! How can they state this without any conviction? They are clearly sending a person down a path of eternal suffering by sending this message. The truth is that religions are very different - they are not the same. Beware of any book that tells you they are the same. They are just telling you what you want to hear - they are comfort books and they are making money from your wallets. Seek the truth - seek the correct way. God promises us all that if we seek Him, He will reveal Himself to us. If you are confused about this, don't pick up a book at a bookstore which is one or two people's opinions. Pick up the Bible. Let God speak to you, not man.

There's one way to spell God: G-O-D,
By A Customer
This review is from: How Do You Spell God? (Paperback)
This book gives a watered down interpretation of the major world religions stating their main purpose is telling us how to live right which they boil down to "doing good." They ignore the necessary base conflicts of the religions and put forth the argument of "all paths lead to the top of the mountain" (i.e. God though some of the religions don't believe in God or believe in many gods). If you want a book that will tell you we can't know truth, all religions are about the same and "right" and doing good is the main thing, get this one. If you're seeking truth, look elsewhere (see "He Is There & He Is Not Silent" By: Francis Schaeffer). There's only ONE way to spell God. Only ONE RIGHT way. We can KNOW what it is. |
