The Basics in Black and White,
By
This review is from: How To Draw Manga
Compared to many of the other books about how to draw Manga on the market, Ben Dunn's How to Draw Manga is very good. He actually takes readers partially through the Manga drawing process verses just showing a bunch of picture examples for aspiring artists to follow.
Dunn also covers a wide range of Manga characters - from cat girls to chibi figures - allowing readers to get a better idea about the different range of Manga character genres that are popular. Dunn also writes a lot of side text that is humorous as well as informative. The biggest con of this books is that it is in all black and white; while it is not necessary to have colored pages in a book about drawing Manga (as Manga itself is done in black and white) in this book, having some color would have helped. Because Dunn uses heavy black lines to illustrate many of the examples in the book, it is hard to differentiate some of the details. Overall, Dunn's How to Draw Manga is a good starting place for anyone who is interested in drawing Manga characters. If nothing else, it will help aspiring artists get the basics of form, facial features, proportion, and some ideas about designing costumes for Manga characters.

Loved the book and use it as a reference every time i draw. I only had one complaint; the section on hands wasn't as descriptive as i would have liked. The best book I've purchased on the subject by far though and i would recommend this book for any aspiring manga artist.
