good for beginners, good for reference,
By
This review is from: How to Draw Manga: Getting Started (Paperback)
This book covers an introduction to the instruments of the trade, perspective, faces, inking, and anatomy, also borders. If you're a beginner, (like me), you may find it useful as an introduction and encouragement. Also, don't avoid the "how many heads tall" section, just because it's boring. Yes, it's boring, but I found it immensely helpful once I broke down and read it.There are lots of drawings to illustrate what they're talking about, and question and answer pages at the back of most chapters. My one complaint would be that most of the drawing are of females. It seemed like they didn't have quite enough reference drawings for drawing men. But, all in all, a good book. If you're interested in drawing manga style stuff, this is a good, basic book to start with.

Quite Literally "Getting Started",
This review is from: How to Draw Manga: Getting Started (Paperback)
While some may jump to the conclusion that this book will immediately cover the greater mechanics and techniques for drawing in the Manga style, it is actually far from that. Rather, it covers the bare essentials for getting started, such as picking the tools and utensils needed, as well as how to use them, and other details like that. The actual portion dedicated to the drawing is very basic and not in depth enough to assist in full blown drawing.Still, it is very informative in the areas it does cover, and is helpful for "getting started". Just keep in mind that it isn't the best choice for merely drawing Manga, but rather a helpful guide to show you what is needed to begin drawing Manga.

This is a really good book for the beginners. A lot of pictures and techniques and tips on how to draw Manga better. It also gives you an idea of how to create comics. All in all I thought it was very informative and helpful. For those who want to learn to draw Manga and are just getting started this is the book for you.

An ok look into drawing manga,
By Kijiyama "Manga Drawer and Anime Fan" (San Francisco, CA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: How to Draw Manga: Getting Started (Paperback)
This book is an ok start to help you get ready with drawing manga. While it is not really for a basic beginner with no knowledge of drawing it is essential for people who have or know a little about drawing. It is not really a nessecity for one to know how to draw but get the basics of drawing in perspective. This book utilizes the fact that you are a person who has seen enough manga or has seen enough drawings to want to get started and shows in it's pages tips and skills about what is needed to how to draw basic figures. While most people with absolutly no background in anime/manga may find it difficult to pick up this style it is easier for those who have been immersed in it for a bit and wanting to know how they are drawn or how to get started. While I admit this book isn't for everyone, I would recommend this book to people who feel they are ready to start learning about the basic steps to drawing their first characters.

A Good Overview,
By "kittygrrlkell" (Detroit, MI USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: How to Draw Manga: Getting Started (Paperback)
I have purchased several of the How to Draw Manga books, and although this wasn't my favorite of the series, there's still a lot of useful information to be had. It contains a good overview of what you need to know to create manga, as well as handy explinations of the basic tools used. Futher books in the series offer more in-depth explanations of the various topics sited, but this volume provides a good starting point. My only complaint would be that it's a bit pricey for what's essentially an introduction.

Not a stand alone book,
By wakkacubed "wakkacubed" (OH, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: How to Draw Manga: Getting Started (Paperback)
Book is overview of the entire manga practice which is much broader than just drawing characters. Includes materials, process, story telling techniques, etc. Tries to cover too much without enough detail in each subject. If you have a subject in mind that you want to draw, you may want to refer to another book in the series that focuses just on that topic

Not really good for beginners,
This review is from: How to Draw Manga: Getting Started (Paperback)
This book is not really a manga getting started book. I don't feel that it explains enough for amateurs; it doesn't have a step by step or enough explanations. This book could maybe help some of those that already got through the amateur phase, but if you're really a beginner I wouldn't recomend it. (...)Maybe after you have mastered everything in these web pages you could buy it.

I have been drawing manga and anime characters since I was eight. Now, over fifteen years later, it's still a passion of mine. Though I haven't practiced much recently. These books are great for getting started or when you need a brush up on skills and proportions.

My boyfriend loved this book, and I couldn't believe how inexpensive it was! However, when I got my copy, it looked a little worn out, but that's okay :) it's a really great book, very informative and fun. I definitely suggest getting it!
