Great for reference, November 22, 2004
This review is from: How To Draw Manga Volume 6 (How to Draw Manga (Graphic-Sha Numbered)) (Paperback)
Martial Arts & Combat Sports cover a good variety of martial arts from judo, karate, to boxing and street fights. It even shows how you draw the uniforms, weapons, and proper poses and positions for each discipline in great detail. Interestingly enough, this book shows martial arts moves that you can literally put to action yourself as it shows it step-by-step.
This book is basically a reference for martial arts moves - proper throws, kicks, punches, etc. It doesn't show special effects like motion lines and so forth. For someone who is familiar with these moves this book becomes pretty much irrelevant to use. If you're looking to show your moves in motion (using action lines and so forth), get your hands on the Illustrating Battles edition.
If you would like view action moves without the baggy clothes hindering the view as found in this book, get Ozawa's How to Draw Anime & Game Characters, Vol. 4: Mastering Battle and Action Books.
All in all, this book complements the other two and would be better getting as a set.

I...like it?, December 19, 2006
This review is from: How To Draw Manga Volume 6 (How to Draw Manga (Graphic-Sha Numbered)) (Paperback)
This book has 5 chapters.
Judo
Karate
Kendo
Boxing
and street fighting
The first four chapters are really good. They're researched very well and cover little things that only an expert might know. For example, the differences between a judo uniform and a karate uniform, the fact that if a corner man enters the ring during the round the boxer is disqualified, how to put on a kendo headwrap, things like that.
Also, the book does a very good job of covering both sexes. There's even a note that says "women usually wear a t shirt under their judo uniform, men don't"
The beginning of the book also has some illustrations with some great ideas and techniques
However. The street fighting section is HORRIBLE. And that's the section I needed the most with the way I do my manga. Also, the artist of the street fighting section doesn't bother with facial expression AT ALL. ALL of the characters have the exact same expression on their face in every pose on every page of the last chapter. It's horrid.
But overall, a pretty good idea. Well researched and well drawn, save for the last chapter. I'd recommend the book to anyone who wants to learn how to draw real, accurate martial arts

Nonchalantly content, August 27, 2004
This review is from: How To Draw Manga Volume 6 (How to Draw Manga (Graphic-Sha Numbered)) (Paperback)
This book has proved to be somewhat usefull. It shows a variety of posses from different fighting styles as well as different uniforms and fighting arena's used for each. It shows how the different uniforms flow according to different stances and moves, this is also usefull if your are planning to draw using the uniform, but what I found unsatisfactory about this book is that since it shows all the moves in very loose, often times baggy, clothing you do not grasp the full understanding of what the body parts look like performing the actions. Ofcourse this greatly affects upon drawing a female fighter. Most of the pictures are male, but if it showed there muscular structure during the combat it would be easy to understand the differences between the female and male posses. Other than that I have no complaints.
