Great for reference,

This review is from: How To Draw Manga Volume 6 (How to Draw Manga (Graphic-Sha Numbered)) (Paperback)
Martial Arts & Combat Sports cover a good variety of martial arts from judo, karate, to boxing and street fights. It even shows how you draw the uniforms, weapons, and proper poses and positions for each discipline in great detail. Interestingly enough, this book shows martial arts moves that you can literally put to action yourself as it shows it step-by-step.
This book is basically a reference for martial arts moves - proper throws, kicks, punches, etc. It doesn't show special effects like motion lines and so forth. For someone who is familiar with these moves this book becomes pretty much irrelevant to use. If you're looking to show your moves in motion (using action lines and so forth), get your hands on the Illustrating Battles edition. If you would like view action moves without the baggy clothes hindering the view as found in this book, get Ozawa's How to Draw Anime & Game Characters, Vol. 4: Mastering Battle and Action Books. All in all, this book complements the other two and would be better getting as a set.

This review is from: How To Draw Manga Volume 6 (How to Draw Manga (Graphic-Sha Numbered)) (Paperback)
This book has 5 chapters.
Judo Karate Kendo Boxing and street fighting The first four chapters are really good. They're researched very well and cover little things that only an expert might know. For example, the differences between a judo uniform and a karate uniform, the fact that if a corner man enters the ring during the round the boxer is disqualified, how to put on a kendo headwrap, things like that. Also, the book does a very good job of covering both sexes. There's even a note that says "women usually wear a t shirt under their judo uniform, men don't" The beginning of the book also has some illustrations with some great ideas and techniques However. The street fighting section is HORRIBLE. And that's the section I needed the most with the way I do my manga. Also, the artist of the street fighting section doesn't bother with facial expression AT ALL. ALL of the characters have the exact same expression on their face in every pose on every page of the last chapter. It's horrid. But overall, a pretty good idea. Well researched and well drawn, save for the last chapter. I'd recommend the book to anyone who wants to learn how to draw real, accurate martial arts

Nonchalantly content,
This review is from: How To Draw Manga Volume 6 (How to Draw Manga (Graphic-Sha Numbered)) (Paperback)
This book has proved to be somewhat usefull. It shows a variety of posses from different fighting styles as well as different uniforms and fighting arena's used for each. It shows how the different uniforms flow according to different stances and moves, this is also usefull if your are planning to draw using the uniform, but what I found unsatisfactory about this book is that since it shows all the moves in very loose, often times baggy, clothing you do not grasp the full understanding of what the body parts look like performing the actions. Ofcourse this greatly affects upon drawing a female fighter. Most of the pictures are male, but if it showed there muscular structure during the combat it would be easy to understand the differences between the female and male posses. Other than that I have no complaints.

Not manga, but real.,

Don't let the cute cover-girl fool you; this isn't about manga fighting styles. These are real styles, with real people. There are also pages dedicated to the uniforms and equipment needed to make your drawings come to life. It's a very useful book.

AWESOME EXAMPLES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!,

This review is from: How To Draw Manga Volume 6 (How to Draw Manga (Graphic-Sha Numbered)) (Paperback)
okay, I was sooo excited when i saw this book and I love it! This isn't a book that will show you HOW to draw, more like it will show you examples. LOTS of EXAMPLES that I found very helpful. The types of fighting they show are: I especially like the Kendo part which has SEVERAL pages dedicated to this particular martial arts. If you wantt hem to show you how to draw circles and triangles and what not with fighting then you'll be disappointed. As stated before is show dozens of examples, many times they have several different views of the same move. They also include tips, and facts about the maritals arts which I found helpful to learn. They show the equipment that are used in detail which is helpful when you do close up versions of a punch for fancy foot work! So, I hope this has helped. I LUV this book, so many helpful moves I can copy and look good in the process.

Holiday gift,
This review is from: How To Draw Manga Volume 6 (How to Draw Manga (Graphic-Sha Numbered)) (Paperback)
I'd give this book maybe 3.5 stars... don't be fooled by the female on the cover. Most of the drawings are of male figures. There did seem to be good information in the book, but for those who prefer to draw females, this book is not the best.
This was a holiday gift for my brother (who is an adult). He has been enlarging and copying (by hand) Manga drawings for at least a year, and his work is beautiful. He just couldn't seem to make the leap to making up his own characters. I flipped through this book once it arrived, and thought it (along with 2 others I got him) would go a long way towards teaching him how to draw his own characters. I don't know how much overlap there is within this quite extensive series, but at least with these first few books there didn't seem to be much. When he got the books he praised them highly and he seems excited to put the new techniques to use.

I must say, when you look at the cover you are going to expect the contents of the book to be a little different than what's in it. It's okay though, especially if you plan on drawing a manga that contains kendo, karate, and other forms of fighting. It gives you a run down on the gear you would use. So it's perfect for those who are interested in doing a action manga in that category.

When I first got this book I wasn't a very good artist, so I thought that it was bad. However, as my skill grew I realized it had alot more to offer then what I had originally though it had. I don't think the book would be very suitable for beginners, but for more intermediate artist I think it is rather helpful. The book features several styles of martial arts, like karate and judo and various outfits and positions that would be found in those sports. It makes an excellent reference for when you need to draw a fighting scene or someone wearing the uniform that would go with that individual martial arts.

Great Book,
This review is from: How To Draw Manga Volume 6 (How to Draw Manga (Graphic-Sha Numbered)) (Paperback)
hey People
look everyone this book is awsome, but it is not for Beggingers but if you are a beggingers listen to me it's good for referense for when you get better at drawing figures. it's great to know how to draw different posions, different styles, and how to poisons with kendo sticks ( can be replaced with swords, daggers, and other wepons) beside that it is very helpful I would diffentaly recomand this book and it's companion book Illustating battles. Despise the nudity which isn't a promblem because you need to know women's body parts are but there is no private "part" exsposed just breasts. every artist dose nudity once in there life. like I say every body part has a function and you need to know how it all fits together.

Important book to have,
By Kiki (Colorado, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: How To Draw Manga Volume 6 (How to Draw Manga (Graphic-Sha Numbered)) (Paperback)
I think this book is reallyreally useful to have if you want to draw battles. Really useful. The only reason it doesn't earn it's last star is that the art is not really manga-style, and the fact that there are about three girls in the whole book...but if you know enough of drawing to be able to see the basic shape of the position, and draw it how you want it, then this book is an excellent buy! I love it and I use it all the time!!!!
