5.0 out of 5 stars Finally! A HTDM book on males
Finding a How to Draw Manga book focusing on males is quite hard to find and gratefully, this book is comprehensive. What it covers by chapters:

Chapter 1: Approaches to Drawing the Male Form
Chapter 2: The Male Body - Parts and Connectives
Chapter 3: Basic Poses - The Figure Clothed and Unclothed
Chapter 4: Male Clothing and Accessories...

3.0 out of 5 stars :(
At least this book hasn't got all the characters in sexual positions, but it does have very boring looking characters also... Maybe the specific male / female books aren't his best works.

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally! A HTDM book on males, November 22, 2004
This review is from: How to Draw Manga: Male Characters (Paperback)
Finding a How to Draw Manga book focusing on males is quite hard to find and gratefully, this book is comprehensive. What it covers by chapters:

Chapter 1: Approaches to Drawing the Male Form
Chapter 2: The Male Body - Parts and Connectives
Chapter 3: Basic Poses - The Figure Clothed and Unclothed
Chapter 4: Male Clothing and Accessories
Chapter 5: Representation Techniques Used By Manga Artists

Chapters 1&2 covers the male anatomy from skeletal structure, body types, head, neck, shoulder, torso, arms, waist, legs, feet, hair, and hands. It even covers how to draw older men which is useful to know. The remaining chapters focus on clothing and offers an array of perspective when drawing a guy from sitting, walking, laying down, and so forth. It also shows various occupational uniforms, the traditional male kimono, and a nicely laid out reference of various hand gestures, footwear, and glasses.

Overall, once you learn the male anatomy, you can keep this book as a reference.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellant!, June 26, 2004

This book taught me how to draw the sometimes complex techniques to drawing the muscles and torso. At last, I can draw men! As far as drawing faces on them, My male characters all end up wearing hockey masks for some reason, lol.

As it has been said before, this book is not really for a beginner.

4.0 out of 5 stars An excellent suplement!, November 10, 2003

This book, like most in Hayashi's "How to Draw Manga" series, is a fabulous suplement to his introductory books. It's not meant to show every detail of drawing, as that's what the basic books are for. However, it does help clearly define the differences between the male and female figures, and goes into detail about male body structures, common design styles and builds.

Excellent reference material, a must have for the anime/manga artist! I know I've inproved since getting it!

5.0 out of 5 stars one of the best in the series, December 19, 2005

this book rocks. this has soooo much stuff all cramped into one little book. This covers every thing from face, hair, body, muscles, eyes and even a ninja section! and tons more. If your finding it hard to draw a pose, the simply flick to the back, heaps of poses, and even how to put glasses on your character and make them hold cigaretts (for some reason).....

get this book. Period.

I agree with the first reviewer. You have to have a basic knowledge of drawing to use this book, but once you do, it will be very helpful. It runs over various body types, poses, facial features, hair, some clothing styles, etc.

Most of the books in this series are not for beginners in drawing, so keep that in mind.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Helpful Book, January 6, 2006
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)

Like most people I have an easy time drawing girls, but a REALLY hard time with the guys! This books goes step by step explaining how the male body should be drawn, then moves on to clothing the character, and finally only the features of men. It's really helpful, the shipping is quick, and now I find drawing men really fun and easy because of this book! I really suggest you buy it! Also because it's a really good deal on Amazon. It's too expensive elsewhere =] Enjoy!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Worthwhile Book, August 6, 2004
This review is from: How to Draw Manga: Male Characters (Paperback)
This book is great for any manga artist who wants to improve their skills at drawing male characters. Although some basic knowledge is needed for you to use this book it includes information on poses, form, clothing and representation techniques. The book is easy to use with clear diagrams and a good easy to understand lay out. This book is also great value for money, in the UK you'd probably have to pay about $26 for a book similar to this. A must buy!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great coverage of guy drawing, May 27, 2005

Most manga how-to books I've purchased focus mainly on girls and young women, so this was a very refreshing break. Lots of illustrations and general tips, very good instruction for the price. Be sure to pickup "How to draw comics the marvel way" which also covers muscle-bound-men drawing techniques in a variety of fighting poses. And of course Vol 20 "Female Characters".

4.0 out of 5 stars Hey, this isn't half bad!, November 26, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: How to Draw Manga: Male Characters (Paperback)
This is a book for anime fans everywhere. It isn't the best book beginners. This is a book about evolution, not revolution. This will enhance your drawing skills but won't create them. Otherwise, this book is great! It has tons of great tips on drawing youthfull males.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome book on male characters!, January 3, 2007
This review is from: How to Draw Manga: Male Characters (Paperback)
Hikaru truly lives up to his name with his how to draw manga books. I was really impressed with Hikaru's how to draw male characters book. This book covers:
Chapter one: Approaches to drawing the male form (This area cover the approaches to drawing the male form, his features, assorted body types, and differences between adults and children.)

Chapter two: The male body: Parts and connectives (This part covers the male body, hands, feet legs, chest, etc.)

Chapter three: Basic poses: The figure clothed and unclothed (which includes standing, walking from front to back and other angles, crawling, reclining, and sitting on the ground.)

Chapter four: Male clothing and accessories:
Uniforms, japanese dress, representing the hand, eye glasses, and shoes.

And finally chapter five: Representation techniques used by manga artists'.

This book is a must have to any how to draw arsenal. This book is very helpful to those who have a little trouble with the male form, since we get so use to drawing females.(not that that's a problem, being that I am a female myself.) All in all, you should definitely buy this book.
