Known for her unusually poignant, poetic and honest songwriting, Christa Wells is finding her place as an independent performing artist. Christa has written with numerous Nashville artists and had songs cut by artists such as Plumb, Point of Grace, and Natalie Grant. Her songs have been hit singles, including most notably "Held" recorded by Natalie Grant, which received airplay in both Christian and mainstream markets and earned her the GMA "Songwriter of the Year" award in 2006. Christa brings even more authenticity to her lyrics byway of delivering them in her own strong, soothing voice, likened to that of Sarah McLachlan and Sara Groves.

How Emptiness Sings is a 7-track EP with all new original songs, and it is my top album of 2011. Note by note, word by word, each song unfolds like a mirror allowing the listener to see himself in places and circumstances he was previously blind to. She is, at the core, a believer in a relational God, and her songs echo that intimacy. As a listener to Christa's music, one feels this kind of acceptance. Yet, the honesty of her lyrics refuses to coddle. they point upward and onward, away from self to a God who is all-knowing, all-powerful, all-worthy of praise.

Rather than address the themes of each song, let me just say this is one of the most captivating albums I've ever heard. Christa has a vocal sincerity and creativity that rivals Brooke Fraser, Audrey Assad, JJ Heller and Sara Groves, who are my top female vocalists of all-time. Some of the stand-out moments of the album include "Everything Moves But You," where Christa brilliantly sings the biblical truth, "All the things I pursue, Well, they stay for a season, Then everything moves, Everything moves, oh, My towers fall, But You aren't leaving me, `Cause everything moves but You.

I met Christa at an arts camp and enjoyed her engaging personality which increased my curiosity about her music. I discovered Christa's musical voice on How Emptiness Sings and found it a wonderful treat. I appreciate the great songwriting, clean production, and this-is-me naturalness to the collection. The honesty without cynicism or cheesiness is delightful. I even found that I could work on creative writing with the smooth, relaxed sounds of this disc. I must go back and listen to Christa's older material.

Christa Wells crafts lyrics that tug at your heart and draw you in. These songs carry an honesty, depth and rawness of emotion not often felt in music. The music is beautiful, but the lyrics transcend.

Panning for Gold and How Emptiness Sings are the standout tracks. Some lyrics from Panning for Gold:

(...I'm looking for answers in the riverbed of life/I'm panning for gold, I'm panning for gold/Until I have all my heart can hold)...(Sifting beauty from the layers of ash/I'm tracing the universe with my fingers in the sand/I'm panning for gold, I'm panning for gold...I go to the riverbed...)

I love the idea of sifting through the hardships of life. It paints such an honest picture of how we are all literally sifting through our lives to find that which is good (and God given). God has been good to us all, sometimes our difficult experiences and relationships require us to put in more effort searching to find His purposes in them.

The song Panning for Gold has an easy swaying beat that, to me, implies being persistent and courageous in the midst of hardships.

As for the song How Emptiness Sings, the lyrics really speak for themselves.

(Sister carries her loneliness/In a hidden hollow inside her chest/And sometimes all that she wants is an end/To the long, long night

But ooh/Her bow is on the strings/And the tune resonates in the open space/
To show us how emptiness sings/

Glory to God, Glory to God/In fullness of wisdom/He writes my story into his song,
My life for the glory of God)

All I can say after those lyrics is Amen!

Christa Wells' second album "How Emptiness Sings" has a depth and authenticity that is hard to come by. To name an album with the word "emptiness" goes to show the honesty with which she is willing to engage in with her music. Christa balances those deep, honest emotions with equally deep Scriptural truths. She's been one of my favorite musicians since "Frame The Clouds" and this new album has definitely lived up to my expectations. I highly recommend both albums to anyone interested in some new quality music.

Listening to music like this is an experience. One cannot understand the depth until you have listened and taken in every word and every note. It is truly wonderful. Christa Wells has offered us a significant gift!
