More mundane, a little less magickal...,
This review is from: How To Enchant A Man: Spells to Bewitch, Bedazzle & Beguile (Paperback)
I'm surprised at Dugan this time around. Usually her books are chock full of magickal know-how with spells and enchantments. She usually adds enough mundane elements to make it work. However, in "How to Enchant a Man," a majority of the material is mundane advice (dress nicer, be more flirty) and tips and such. While this book lacks some of the magickal punch that Dugan usually provides, it is still an excellent book and sure to get you noticed by any guy lucky enough to be the center of your attentions.

I bought this book because I am interested in all Dugan books. I love her writing style and the subject is fascinating... love magick! It was again a great choice. In her usual style Ellen Dugan walks the reader through easy to follow advices, tips and magick. She gives a fun, positive and respectful book for both the reader and the subject she chose. I totaly advise every woman who searches to find a friendly and fun guide to confidence through a wiccan perspective to buy it. A note of warning: if you expect to find spells that will bide someone to you and make him love you either he wants this or not don't buy this book. BUT if you want to find a way to tap to your own strength, find self-confidence and love in a Wiccan, fun and loving way then buy all means this is a great book to buy!

Yeah, I agree with other reviews when they say that her ideas are common sense for women. Let me say, however, that I enjoyed the little charms included inside, and despite everything else being common sense I did learn quite a bit.

The majority of this book is pure, unadulterated feminine frou-frou. Several times I had to verify if I was reading a book on enchantments or a guide on how to prepare for writing an over the top romance novel.Over half the book is dedicated to ways of making you feel better about yourself and how to feel sexy. Not that those are bad things, far from it, but that is not what I bought this for. I thought perhaps a chapter devoted to spell work ethics, another chapter on self-acceptance and having a positive attitude, then lots of information on drawing, keeping, enhancing, and healing love. Instead I got bombarded by advice on how to embrace how soft and loving and giving I, as a female, am. How women are the strong, yet yielding force that balances a man's rugged firmness. How to be frilly and flirty with a rhyme here and a little intent there to slay the one who is already paying me attention and secure his heart. There is an entire section on how to look pretty with advice on how to have your hair cut and dress well (don't forget that flowy lingerie!), for pity's sake. I nearly got sick. Normally Ellen Dugan has wonderful tidbits of lore and very practical and sane ways of dealing with things. That was part of my initial drive to have a copy of this book. I just knew she was going to help brighten my day with down to earth writing and lots of useful information. I think her publisher must have finally driven her into the land of fluffy-bunnies and left her there to go mad. Don't get me wrong, there are some really good spells in here, even if they do lack imagination, and the effort put into making each individual woman feel wonderful about herself is great (and the only reason I gave this two stars), but not enough to justify purchasing this book. If I had reviewed this in a store, I never would have paid for this. Instead, I would have gotten myself a book on self-acceptance and positive body image because at the end of the day, that's all this is. There is little here for those who do not run around saying 'Goddess bless' and 'feel the mother-energy.' Single women who do possess strong hearts beware the sugary sap that drips from these pages.

I thouroughly enjoyed this book. Not only does it cover the ethics of the Craft, but it has tons of enchanting love spells, lists of herbs, plants, and crystals that can be used in magic, and plenty of ideas for magic charm bags to carry on your person for various love spells. There is also a lot of candle magic throughout, so be prepared to stock up on plenty of pink and red candles (as well as other colors)! Overall, I recommend this book to any woman seeking a new love, or looking to keep the fire going in a current relationship. I give it an enthusiatic five stars!
