5.0 out of 5 stars The best written technical book I've read in years!, December 7, 2002
By
This review is from: How to Do Everything with HTML (Paperback)
If you want to learn how to make a professional looking website, with a minimum learning curve, then this is the book for you. I've been programming for over 21 years and this is one of the few books that I would rate as excellent. HTML alone will not produce a very good looking website, although it contains the basic foundation you need to start.

Jim gives you ample information about the various tools to allow you to build your site with confidence. Using tools such as CSS, Tables, Frames, JavaScript,DHTML and XML. Each of these subjects is a book in themselves but Jim gives you enough knowledge to build a professional looking site without overwhelming you. The writing is clear, concise and fun, the examples and practices are straight forward and plentiful.

If you're not an expert but want to build website's like one, then this one book you must own.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Starter Book, May 9, 2004
By
This review is from: How to Do Everything with HTML (Paperback)
"How to Do Everything in HTML" does exactly what it says. It simply takes a beginner (like me) and shows how to use basic programming to do what you want rather than what you can figure out.

This is THE book I would recommend to someone who wants to know what HTML is and does but lacks prior computer programming experience. Even those familiar with other computer languages such as C++ or java will find the user-friendly approach by Pence a joy over most technical books.

If a beginner's book is what you want, here it is!

If you ... dont want to fork up the [dollar amount] for the book, I suggest going to ... the web. If you want pay for a book, this book is certainly your best choice. The layout is simple and any person with absolutely no prior knowledge of HTML can learn it in less than two weeks. It also serves as a great reference after you master html, and you need a little help to look back on something you forgot. The only reason it gets four stars, is because it leaves out more complex things that I want to do with html. Other than that, great book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Darn book ever written!, July 2, 2002
This review is from: How to Do Everything with HTML (Paperback)
My wife told me to build a website for my business in order to save money and I looked at her as if she was crazy, but that was before I stumbled across How to do everything with HTML. STOP!! LISTEN!! Do not buy any other book until you have read this book and gone through it. Take it from somebody who did not know anything about building websites to one who built his own website in 2 weeks flat!! This is the very best book in the world. I know because I went through other books just to see if they came close, they did not. One other thing, Mr. Pence will reply to your enquires if you have any problems...

5.0 out of 5 stars It's simply too complete!, June 13, 2004

This review is from: How to Do Everything with HTML (Paperback)
I took a course on HTML that lasted 4 months, and I thought I knew HTML after that. Two years after that I read this book, and in the month it took me to read it and summarize it, I learned more than what I did in that course. Not only does it teach you almost everything you need to know about HTML in an easy-to-follow way, but it also gets into other subjects like CSS, JavaScript and XML. Great book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Good book if you are new to HTML, November 21, 2004
This review is from: How to Do Everything with HTML (Paperback)
Written for beginners, this book provides a solid foundation in how to write your own HTML (not how to use a WYSIWIG editor, such as FrontPage). Written in friendly, easy-to-understand language, the author progresses from chapter to chapter in a logical step-by-step fashion. What he doesn't cover in any given chapter is easily referenced in the Appendices, or in the many website links he provides. This book completely demystifies HTML.

However, what I found confusing when learning HTML is when and where to apply the all the different attributes (such as background color, font styles, text & image positioning and so forth). What I learned after having done a fair amount of web development is that cascading style sheets (CSS) are the way to go. This is explained in ch. 10. The reader of this book may wish to jump to this chapter at the beginning and be ahead of the game.

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: How to Do Everything with HTML (Paperback)
I was completely inexperienced and without HTML knowledge. I ordered this book from amazon.com and suddenly I have one of the best and prettiest websites ever. This book teaches you everything. I didn't even read it page by page. I just looked up what I was looking for or what I wanted to do on my website, used the codes and wa-la, instant beautiful results. This book saves you time and gives you precisely what you are looking for. Recommended 100%.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent author, February 27, 2005
By
This review is from: How to Do Everything with HTML (Paperback)
I think this book was more advanced than I was able to handle, considering I was a beginner computer user. Nevertheless, when I
e-mailed the author 3-4 times, he was always professional, courteous, and willing to help. It's a great book and has an author who stands behind his product. If you are into web-page design, this book is definitely worth its money.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book to learn HTML, March 24, 2002
By
Lisa Bradshaw (Pompano Beach, Fl USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: How to Do Everything with HTML (Paperback)
The author of this book does an excellent job of explaining HTML from the bottom up. He speaks in laymans terms but does not talk down to you. What I really like about this book is that it teaches CSS right alongside the HTML that you're learning. Almost like 2 books in 1! Although he does not go very in-depth with the CSS, it is enough to whet your appetite and get your creative juices flowing. You'll be able to make some really nice web sites by the time you're done with this book. If after you've read this book you would like to learn more in-depth CSS, I would recommend O'reily's CSS the Definitive Guide, and for a good HTML/XHTML reference book, I would also look to O'reily's.

5.0 out of 5 stars How to Do Everything with HTML, December 18, 2001
This review is from: How to Do Everything with HTML (Paperback)
As an avid book reader, I can honestly say, without a doubt, that James H. Pence is one of the very best writers that I have ever encountered. This book, with it's easy to understand language, gave me the courage and confidence to try creating a web site.
Once I got started there was no stopping me. Mr. Pence makes learning fun and easy! This book is the next best thing to taking an actual college course. The author's personality and true caring are extremely obvious throughout this book. Jim Pence is a Terrific Guy, who writes terrific, truly helpful books. I highly recommend him to anyone. Buy the book ~ I promise you won't be disappointed.
