Book Description

November 23, 1993

"I didn't die because you said I didn't have to."

For years Dr. Bernie Siegel has been caring for seriously ill patients and their families. On this recording Dr. Siegel discusses the traits that his exceptional and successful clients have used to heal themselves and their lives.

In recounting these exceptional experiences in healing, Dr. Siegelshares his great belief in the power that hope can give patients and stresses the importance of medical caregivers and family sharing in the civilization of hope. Dr. Siegel, or Bernie as he prefers to be called, also encourages people to participate actively in their treatment and cure as many of his exceptional patients have done. An interest in healing, he explains, is an interest in living.

Included are Bernie's thoughts on the healing powers of love, the power of the subconscious mind, the necessity of patients finding a doctor's that's right for them, and the use of illness to learn about life, confront pain, and create the changes needed for healing. He also deals with the issues of guilt and failure that may arise in confronting these challenges.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Best-selling author Siegel discusses case studies of patients who have survived despite long odds. He shares his belief in the strength of hope and explains how medical caregivers and family members can help cultivate it. Siegel explains how Alexander Solzhenitsyn's Cancer Ward (1966) as well as ideas about self-induced miracles have influenced his work. He stresses that his successful patients were not denying their immortality; they did not set out not to die but rather to live. Some of the traits of exceptional patients, Siegel notes, are assertiveness, responsible participation, and religious conviction. Other topics he touches on are the healing power of love, the power of the subconscious mind, the importance of finding the right doctor, and how to use illness to confront pain, guilt, and failure. The author reads his text with calm assertiveness. Highly recommended for public libraries.

About the Author

Bernie S. Siegel, M.D., who prefers to be called Bernie, practiced general and pediatric surgery in New Haven, Connecticut, until he retired in 1989. In 1978, he began talking about patient empowerment and the choice to live fully and die in peace. He founded ECaP (Exceptional Cancer Patients) based on "carefrontation," a loving, safe, therapeutic confrontation that facilitates personal change, empowerment and healing. The resulting physical, spiritual and psychological benefits led Bernie's desire to make everyone aware of his or her healing potential.

As a physician who has cared for and counseled innumerable patients, Bernie embraces a philosophy that is at the forefront of a society grappling with medical ethics and spiritual issues. His books, Love, Medicine and Miracles published in 1986, Peace, Love and Healing in 1998, have broken new ground in the field of healing. Bernie's efforts have now turned toward humanizing medical care and medical education, and he continues to travel extensively with his wife, Bobbie, to speak and run workshops, sharing his techniques and experiences. Bernie and Bobbie have five children and five grandchildren (so far).
