The second book in Laurie Hanen's Louise Golden mystery series, How Far is Heaven?, has a grittier plot than her debut novel, Almost Paradise. Both offer a strong protagonist and an entertaining story.

How Far is Heaven? opens with a gripping action scene. The stage is set for a story that takes the reader on a tumultuous journey to a seamier side of Paradise. Away from the bright lights of tourist attractions, illegal activities have slipped under the radar, festering unchecked until Louise Golden stumbles upon, or more accurately, drivers her mail truck into, the heart of the matter.

Several new facets of protagonist Louise Golden's character are revealed as the story progresses. During a trip to New York's Manhattan, a new dimension of her personal life unfolds that is both endearing and controversial. Tension builds as Louise experiences conflicting emotions over the death of an estranged family member. The strain of expectations, real or imagined, only adds to her stress.

As mentioned, the novel opens in Honolulu. Louise is suspended from her job over an accident that was beyond her control. While the case is under investigation, she travels to Manhattan, where she attempts to gain perspective into the earlier years of her life. Upon returning to Honolulu, she resumes her search for an evil that has woven its tentacles deep into a segment of life in Hawaii. As that world begins to unravel, Louise is dragged into a situation that turns life-threatening.

Before reading How Far is Heaven?, I wondered how the horse on the book's cover related to a mystery set in Hawaii. Now I know.

I just finished Laurie Hanan's kindle version of How Far is Heaven! It was a great read, from the moment I started it, I couldn't put it down.

I felt like I was in Hawaii sharing the same feelings as Louise!

If you love easy reading books that have a little romance, a little sadness, a lot of action and set in a a beautiful location -- this is the book for you.

Pick up a copy, I know you will not be dissapointed.

Looking forward to the next Louis Golden adventure!!!!

It took me a little while to settle into the mellow pacing of Laurie Hanan's How Far is Heaven? but once I did, I couldn't leave the complex, layered world she built around Louise Golden, a mail carrier who is so much more: a young woman with family issues, a "complicated" love life, and a menage of pets. The central drama, the rescue of a young woman from a family keeping her as a sex slave, almost isn't as dramatic as Louise's pilgrimage to bury her estranged father in the strange world of New York...or her exploration of her relationships with three different, intriguing men. In spite of these seeming glamorous interludes, nothing in Louise's life is glitzy and her angst is believable, as is her quest for justice for a woman who won't get any without her help. The story has a "real Hawaii" feel that only someone who makes their home here can understand, from the intimate friendships with neighbors to the use of pit bulls for security.
Write on, Laurie!

In her second Louise Golden Mystery, Laurie Hanan once again takes us to Paradise, where there is a new and very different mystery to be solved. We learn more about Louise, her background, her conflicts, and her complicated love life in this installment, but her commitment to never letting go until she finds an answer is once again on display. The setting of Christmastime in Hawaii plays as much a role in this finely crafted mystery as the intriguing characters. The characters that return from the first book grow in depth while retaining the features that made us care about them the first time around. The Louise Golden Series is one that you will want to climb on board, if you haven't already, and hang on for all the exciting stories that are sure to come. laurie knows how to capture and hold your interest while continually inviting you to explore what is beneath the surface.

The second book in Laurie Hanan's series, How Far Is Heaven? takes us forward a few years in the life of Lousie Golden. Old characters appear anew as their relationships deepen, and new characters popup, adding texture to Golden's life. She travels from Hawaii to New York in this story, though most of the mystery takes place in Hawaii. In New York, we learn more about Golden's family history and what makes her tick.

I can relate to some parts of Golden's life - my father was a German Jewish immigrant to England and then to the States, and my mother was American from Christian roots that went back to the Mayflower. Gordon's family's Judaism is the focus of her time in New York. A the same time, we learn a little more about her Christian roots, too. I enjoyed the Hebrew verses as they hearken back to times I shared Jewish festivities and funerals with my cousins and friends. I also enjoy learning a little more Hawaiian. It does not distract from the story at all, but adds depth to Golden's personality.

The focus is not the mystery in Hanan's tale, but the development of Louise Gordan and her decisions to empower herself and grow from who she has been to become the stronger woman she is today. There's plenty of growing left to do! Curiosity over who she will become makes the next book in the series one to get!
