5.0 out of 5 stars Food for the soul., February 1, 2008
By
This review is from: How Fear Moves (Paperback)
This book was written from the soul. I know this to be true, when I opened it up and it immediately grabbed a hold of me and still lingers, long after I have finished it. The author does an amazing job of juggling your attention through his childhood, his present, and his dream world. As well as feeding you quotes and offering a moment of reflection before seducing you back into the story. This book is intelligent, intimate, and personal, it makes you laugh, cry, think, and makes you proud of the strength and the will to overcome and succeed, displayed by one man. The author also uses amazing imagery, as he describes places and situations you feel like you are right there with him. Don't miss the opportunity to feed your soul with this story.

5.0 out of 5 stars Powerful, Intense, Shocking!, August 27, 2008
This review is from: How Fear Moves (Paperback)
Eugene Jackson's "How Fear Moves" is an essay on personal courage and this man's ability to move through, over and/or around both external and internal obstacles that prevent many from not only reaching for, but also setting, life goals. The most amazing thing about this book is that the violence and abuse that Mr. Jackson suffered from colleagues, a dysfunctional parent and, in the end his spouse, did not turn him into a violent or abusive person but somehow contributed to his growth and strength.
I loved the spirituality of this book. Throughout there are examples, a sense of the unknown/ unexplainable, contributing to the formation of Mr. Jackson's character. The "dark man", the ghost in Big Mama's tree, dreams that threaten to spill into waking life.
Thanks Eugene Jackson. I haven't read a book so thought provoking since "Eucalyptus".

4.0 out of 5 stars If life gives you lemons, open your own lemonade stand, June 16, 2008
This review is from: How Fear Moves (Paperback)
Life throws many challenges at you. "How Fear Moves" is one man's journey of how he faced adversity and rose above it.

Eugene Jackson writes "Fear can be an effective motivator, capable of causing its subject to flee, stand frozen in terror, fight, or take other corrective measures. For Marines, only two of those options are acceptable, though in my life I have sampled them all." Jackson eloquently captures the sundry types of human angst in his memoir "How Fear Moves."

Jackson started life with the odds stacked against him. Born into poverty, he is the son of an alcoholic father, whose mood swings quickly taught him to fear his violent outbursts. What Jackson also learned early in life, is that everyone can be a role model -- even if he teaches you what not to do in your own life. With both positive and negative role models in his life, Jackson finds the focus in life to overcome the many kinds of adversity we all face.

Jackson's memoir is filled with vignettes of various types of fear he experienced through his life as a small child and following him through his experiences in the United States Marine Corps. Each chapter begins with an inspirational quote that he has masterfully matched with his main message.

Jackson is an extremely talented writer and can certainly tell a story. The flow of the book varies from memories of childhood, adolescence, and adulthood, with various dreams interspersed. The deliberate weaving of these timelines provides the context as Jackson faces challenges throughout his adult life.

The inspirational message of "How Fear Moves" is clear -- with enough motivation and positive focus, you can overcome anything that life throws at you. Eugene Jackson is living proof.
