So many of the artists, crafters, writers & performers I talk with are intimidated by the profit side of our business - we don't understand numbers, and are afraid of what they might tell us, so we shut our eyes tightly and ignore them, hoping that we'll just magically turn a profit by accident and sheer force of will. Nicole is out to change that for us, to get us to stop squinting suspiciously at numbers, overcome our anxiety and discover new ways to think about profit, pricing, and business spending habits. With "Finance Rock Star" she's provided tools that do just that, sharing some of her "Number Whispering" secrets.
Full of quirky illustrations, amusing anecdotes and down to earth examples of rock-star profits, the book's tone put me at ease and had me laughing at topics that usually tense me up. I'll be working through a lot of the examples, formulas and ideas over the next few months as I set up a new biz project, and wish I'd had them for previous projects.
I'm proud to call Nicole one of my creative co-horts, and thrilled to have this book as a resource for the small biz folks I work with.
Author Nicole Fende, aka the Numbers Whisperer, makes financial terms simple and shows you how to tame the financial beast via a series of formulas and charts and copious helpings of down-to-earth advice - and she's funny too! You're sure to laugh out loud a few times when reading this book.
There are relevant illustrations and funny characters (Fluffy the Finance Feline and Max the Math Mutt) to help you understand the concepts. The book also includes plenty of useful resources (some of them available via QR codes) if you want to go even further.
The rock star analogy carries through the book, providing a good base for discussing topics like profit goals, business funding, managing expenses and pricing. Anyone who reads this book is sure to understand more about managing business numbers by the end of the process - I certainly did!
But that doesn't mean the technical stuff is left out. Formulas are explained in easy to understand terms and then high lighted for quick reference. There are video bonuses accessible via QR code to give you even more information. But she also explains to you the finance terms and how they're used, so if you need to carry on an intelligent conversation with someone about your finances, say, with your accountant, you'll understand what they're saying and be able to express yourself in the same language.
Thank goodness Nicole wrote this resource!
It's a simple truth, and one we all pay lip service to, yet one that perennially eludes many of us. Particularly for creative types who just want to go do their own work, many of us struggle with the day to day finance management tasks we know we ought to be doing, to say nothing of actually engaging in the larger-scale planning and strategy work that is necessary for solid growth. Nicole Fende has written the definitive guide to business finance for solo and small biz owners who find finance mystifying and anxiety-inducing. Her writing style is clear, concise, and conversational, yet she never sacrifices accuracy or thoroughness for humor or "an easy read."
Nicole's book will appeal greatly to creative business owners in particular, in no small part because of the "rock star" theme. After all, don't we all want to be known as rock stars in our fields? Finance CAN be sexy, as Nicole's book conclusively shows!
