Does What the Title Says,
By
This review is from: How to Find Morels (Paperback)
In general I don't eat wild mushrooms, partly because I have read too many murder mysteries. Morels are the exception, because they are fairly easy to identify and pretty hard to confuse with poisonous varieties of mushrooms.
Milan Pelouch and his wife Lila have written a hand little guide for those who like morel hunting, and I scored an early review copy at LibraryThing. This little book does exactly what it says it will do in the title- tells you all about how to find Morel mushrooms, using a friendly, chatty style. Clear photographs and helpful descriptions (including photos and descriptions of mushrooms that are NOT Morels) are just the beginning. Pelouch also takes time to explain the science behind Morels, how they grow, why they grow where they do, when they grow, and how to harvest them so as to ensure the chance of a good harvest next year. Best of all, he gives excellent advice on where to find them, describing the sort of terrain, soil, vegetation, and other aspects of the sort of habitat where you might expect to find morels. The recipes (by Lila Pelouch) are a bonus, and Milan Pelouch concludes with a section on mushroom hunters etiquette and a map with a time table showing when you might expect tfo find morels in your state. We love morels and I am looking forward to using this book to discover a patch in our woods, but even if we don't find any, we'll have learned some useful woodcraft and field information from this book, which, as Charlotte Mason type homeschoolers, makes me pretty happy.

Ready to head for the woods to shop in Mother Nature's grocery store?
Novice morel hunters will appreciate the concise information supplied by this authoritative-yet-friendly guide. The more than a dozen recipes included -- such as morel mousse and fresh morel pate -- are excellent motivators! - L. Dannelke

This is a great little book for those who want to increase their odds of finding the precious morel. It is a fast, easy read and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I have tried a few of the recipes and they were wonderful!
I re-ordered two additional copies for friends and would recommend this book to most anyone.

This is a nice book. It is simply written for the mushroom hunter rather than the mycologist. Great pictures, descriptions, recipes, and hunting tips. A good companion to Michael Kuo's morel book.

As described, the book is a great starting point for those interested in finding some morels in the wild. Especially those living in the mid-west.
Also nice quality photos included, a surprise for any affordable soft-cover!

Not very good book for identifying morels, not does this book help you find them unless you live in his exact area. Go on Youtube, you'll find morels in texas grow around completely different trees than the do in Jersey. I spent over 20 hours hunting, finding not even one. Spoke to a local mycologist, bam! Save you money, join a mushroom club.

I liked the book very much...It's not the authors fault that I'm not very lucky when it comes to finding morels. My timing is usually off or the location. I'm still new to the sport and this book will be a big help!

Terrible book. No maps, no real good tree identification, very preachy, and the same info in this book can be found in any field guide. I'll probably donate it to the local library.
Bottom line: I am sort of a novice at finding morels and this book didn't make me learn anything more valuable than I already know. |
