Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Gr 3-5--Two visually attractive books. Bailey explores methods of locomotion and varied forms of swimming apparatuses of fish and other aquatic animals. Chapters on fish that "fly" and on deep-sea fishes will intrigue readers. Fish that "swim" on dry land and land animals that swim are also examined. Penny looks at the cycle of flowering, pollination, seed production, germination, growth, and a return to flowering that plants use to reproduce, revealing the fascinatingly diverse and often strange ways in which different plants meet each of these requirements. Chapters on parasitic and carnivorous plants add to the oddities. Entries under "Unusual Plants" include the rafflesia, which produces a huge red flower over three feet across, and an orchid whose flowers mimic the fly that pollinates it. Brilliant, clear full-color photographs are generously spread throughout the books. Colorful, clear diagrams are utilized wherever photographs prove inadequate in explaining certain points. Lively writing makes the already fascinating information even more so, and an index and glossary add to the usefulness. Worthy additions to any collection.
