Book Description

August 1, 1998
In this groundbreaking look at the psychology of forgiveness, the authors show how resentment -- toward other people, toward one's self, even toward God -- can consume precious emotional energy and seriously impair both self-esteem and the ability to experience joy. Offering a short program for accelerating the process of forgiveness, and enlivened with classic quotations on the nature of forgiveness, this revolutionary book explodes long-standing myths -- including the notion that forgiveness involves self-denial, making up, confessing, or turning the other cheek.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Key to Peace, July 7, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: How to Forgive When You Don't Know How (Paperback)
I have read this book over ten times. It awakened me to the power of forgiveness. The book starts off with a definition that says forgiveness is completed when the memory of the incident no longer carries an emotional charge.

The book explains all the myths of forgiveness, myths that many people believe are true. I learned that "holding resentment requires energy that would produce more joy if directed elsewhere." The redirection of this energy has been found to diminish serious health problems. Forgiveness affirms, strengthens, and frees us from the hatred that eats away at our bodies. To help the reader understand this there are many forgiveness stories. The authors explain the stages of forgiveness as well as some processes for forgiving.

Before I read this book I didn't know any of this. To me forgiveness was just a compromise to end a fight. And where deep wounds are concerned forgiveness was never in the picture. If you think the way I used to I recommend that you read this book. It is short, clear, concise, and easily understandable. The book will bring joy to your life and the lives of the people around you as it did to me. Read it, again and again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Book is Out of Print BUT Bishop's OTHER BOOK IS JUST AS GOOD, March 13, 2004

I realize that some Amazon.com customers would really like to order this book; however, you can NOT get it b/c it is out of print, and it may be hard to find a used copy. But not to worry! Jacqui Bishop (same author of this book) actually wrote another book that covers the topic of Forgiveness in an even better format than this book. I have thoroughly read BOTH books and love them both.

The book title is: "How to Love Yourself When You Don't Know How" I HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK IF YOU WANT TO LEARN HOW TO FORGIVE, and is EVEN BETTER than "How to Forgive When You Don't Know How." It is in print and can be bought from Amazon.com for a very reasonable price of $13. Small price to pay for the healing and peace of mind the book has to offer.

I do highly highly recommend the book "How to Forgive When You Don't Know How", as I was able to get a used copy of this book, and it did change my life. But it is currently out of print, so please do get "How to Love Yourself When You Don't Know How"

I have read many authors on Forgiveness, but none of them are as comprehensive and make sense as Jacqui Bishop. Her books are incredible.

If you are into healing your life, I also recommend:
1) "Reclaiming Your Life" by Jean Jenson
2) "Drama of the Gifted Child" by Alice Miller
3) "Dark Side of the Light Chasers" by Debbie Ford

All of these books have been instrumental in healing my life. But Jacqui Bishop is a great place to start.

Good luck in your journey!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars It was good..., January 2, 2011

It was good... Sadly I'm the type of person that needs this type of book and it gave me a better understanding on things that I do (how I look at things) that is preventing me from actually and really "forgiving" someone. It doesn't hold your hand and show you how to forgive, it gives you the necessary tools to forgive. It helped me understand a lot and is putting me on the right path. It's kinda like my guide, I keep going back to it to correct my behavior when I run into a problem.
