"Mary Dawson's wonderful book starts where the others leave off -- what do you do after you've written your great songs?...I love the way she puts a hopeful face on the future of the business by giving real life stories of people making it their own way, wherever they are." --Jimmy Kachulis, Professor of Songwriting, Berklee College of Music, Boston, MA
"Thank goodness Mary Dawson has documented some of her knowledge about the music industry...This book should now be on the 'Required Reading' list for songwriters." --Jim Sharp, American Songwriter Magazine, Publisher (Retired)

Professionally, I have been involved in the music business for over 25 years. I am the president of CQK Music Group of Dallas (http://www.cqkmusic.com) which is the umbrella company for many products and services for songwriters, artists, musicians and music lovers. Throughout my professional career I have I have earned several post-doctoral degrees in the School of Hard Knocks, and I have tried to pass on what I have learned to those who are just starting out or have hit a roadblock on their music journey.
My book, "How to Get Somewhere in the Music Business from Nowhere with Nothing," contains the answers to the literally thousands of questions about songwriting and the music business that I have received over the years in response to my Internet and print articles, my classes and seminars. I hope you find the book to be helpful and will look forward to your feedback.

The beauty of this book is that she breaks down concepts and ideas that many know about however need a wee bit more clarification. She teaches you how to copyright your material, how to be your own publisher, how to network, how write out your song lyrics in a professional manner, how to find resources to put your demo together, how to make the most of your cash advance (if you're a signed artist) and much, much more!!! This is not a fake review. I was not hired to sing praises to her name. I just think that Mary Dawson knows what she's talking about and has a beautiful heart that translates itself into her wonderfully engaging and informative book.
If you just want to get a feel for what she has to say then check out her articles on Writer's Write. I'm sure after reading a few you'll be intrigued enough to want to know more!!!! Trust me!! My all time favorite article is called "Perseverance: The Key to the Doors of Success Part I "and the link is [...] . If you want to browse around after that, the following link provides a listing of some of her other articles. [...]

I haven't read a book in 3 years due to depression, but I have to say your book was difficult to put down.
I have recommended this book to our friends. This book is very informative.
I have written 3 songs, but I am going to try your ideas,
I believe you can always learn more, besides the information sounds so down to earth.
Also I have to say that you are a wonderful person, so approachable.
I will be watching for more books on songwriting by Mary Dawson.
See You at the Grammy's!

"This book is simplicity in one hand and a ton of information in the other that will flow thru your mind like a Ferris Wheel."
Remember a couple years ago there was Garth, Randy, Alan, Travis. Now there is Miranda, Blake, Jason, TB Perry.... Well guess what? There is going to be more hot groups and unknown stars yet to be discovered. There is no reason why it couldn't be you, somebody will be next. Whether you currently have a jammin band or just have awesome lyrics on your laptop.
Did you know Garth used to sell shoes and Alan drove a forklift in a warehouse and you do ______ ?
The stars didn't have all the answers when they were green behind the ears, standing looking at the uphill climb that they had to make. They had the desire, and drive, to keep at it. Even after hearing hundreds of, "No, you can't do that", doors closed in their face and unanswered emails.
There are books that will teach you to write the perfect song. And there are legal smeagle books that will make your eyes glaze over. But if you want a book that explains the music business from A to Z, Get Mary Dawson's Book!
Mary say's, you want to "GROW into the Music Business not Go into the music business". It's a series of small steps instead of the leap that ends up getting your wallet ransacked?
Whether this is your first or fifth music book and if you want to hear the roar of real applause instead of water beating your shower wall, this book is a must have!
P.S. Shhhh,... There is something else in there that you will want to know. Mary tells you how to submit your songs professionally to your favorite group, Shhhh!
