When I first began my search for a permanent teaching job, I picked up this book. I found it extremely helpful in constructing a teaching resume. The trouble with the standard resume format is that the rules do not apply to the teaching profession. Since the book is written by administrators it would be helpful if they would give an idea as to the answers administrators want to hear, unfortuneatley the book falls short in this area.
The other area the book could improve on is demonstration lessons, what administrators are looking for. I am sure this varies from school to school but it would still be helpful to hear more about the demonstration lesson phase of the interview process.

The trouble with the standard resume format is that the rules do not apply to the teaching profession. After following their guidelines for my resume, I was granted an interview with the school I now teach at. This book then prepared me for the barrage of interviews that followed and I, thankfully, knew what to expect. This book was definitely an asset. What better testimonial than someone who has secured a teaching job by using it?

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Helpful, August 10, 2007
This review is from: How to Get the Teaching Job You Want: The Complete Guide for College Graduates, Teachers Changing Schools, Returning Teachers and Career Changers (Paperback)
I bought this book and "Teacher Interviews" at the same time. I thought they were both good. Each book provided me with information and helped me to refine my cover letters and resumes. After I bought these two books, I was called for an interview from the first school district I applied to. I am now in the third round of interviews for that district. Especially helpful in this book was the four most common errors of cover letters. I have started a database of "scripts" to insert into my cover letters or resume based on the needs of the school district to which I am applying which matches my accomplishments with their needs. I also liked the organization ideas that "How to Get the Teaching Job You Want" recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL resource for the teaching profession, March 28, 2008
This review is from: How to Get the Teaching Job You Want: The Complete Guide for College Graduates, Teachers Changing Schools, Returning Teachers and Career Changers (Paperback)
I accidentally stumbled upon this book when it was placed on the wrong shelf in a local bookstore, and it was just the book I was looking for. It is difficult to find a resource online about how to write cover letters and resumes for the teaching field. I followed the author's outline of creating a cover letter explicitly and was granted an interview within 4 days of sending my cover letter, resume and electronic portfolio packet through snail mail. I appreciate the author's perspectives as the people who do the hiring and their no frills approach to cover letters and resumes. A great resource!

2.0 out of 5 stars becoming a teacher, June 1, 2009
This review is from: How to Get the Teaching Job You Want: The Complete Guide for College Graduates, Teachers Changing Schools, Returning Teachers and Career Changers (Paperback)
No, this is not what i had in mind when i purchased it. i wanted something more detailed that will help you create a resume and coverletter. the book states that it will help you, but it really doesn't it just has a sheet that recommends that you answer what you're looking for in a career, but never gives suggestions. Also it gives you many questions to expect in your interview, but no suggestions on how to answer them. all in all you have to do the work yourself and if you never taught before you really need help in this area. it even has the nerve to suggest that you talk to other teachers and such for suggestions when that was supposedly the purpose of THIS BOOK! if you're a first year teacher don't waste your time purchasing this book, you'll be disappointed.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great start. Now take it further., April 16, 2010

This review is from: How to Get the Teaching Job You Want: The Complete Guide for College Graduates, Teachers Changing Schools, Returning Teachers and Career Changers (Paperback)
This book is the best help for recent education grads looking for detailed guidance concerning the job search/interview process in the specific pursuit of a K-12 teaching career. If you fit in this category, I heartily recommend this book. But while much of the advice can be applied to any kind of job search--not just teaching--it is of less help to career changers, despite its enthusiastic claims.

In this economy, with so many people considering a career change, they would do well to bring this book out again with more detailed information about how one goes about making the change to teaching either while still employed in an "old" career or unemployed. Start at the very beginning by discussing how long training takes, how much it costs, if there are on-the-job-training programs that offer an income while a new teacher is training?

The other major change I'd like to see them make is acknowledging that "teaching" need not be limited to a K-12 classroom. This book seems to be permanently stuck on primary and secondary schools with no acknowledgment that "teaching" can also encompass corporate training, seminar teaching, adult GED tutoring and professional skills coaching.

In mid-career, I am seeking to return to my ancient passion for teaching but this book is too narrow in scope for me to call it a complete success. If you're going to put "career changers" in the title, give us more than tokenism status.

3.0 out of 5 stars Outdated already...a shame, August 24, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: How to Get the Teaching Job You Want: The Complete Guide for College Graduates, Teachers Changing Schools, Returning Teachers and Career Changers (Paperback)
This book was written in 2004, and it's already beginning to show it's age. At the time, online applications hadn't really been the norm, apparently, and they recommend you look in a number of sources which, as of the time of this writing, do not appear as though they had anywhere near a large number of job offerings to be considered viable. They suggest that you mail in information, which, at least in my experience, is not something that any school is encouraging me to do, especially since I've been uploading all of my information.

There is value in the job interview process chapter, the sample interview questions, and in the short discussion of some common interviewing requests, such as demonstration lessons. The latter section is unfortunately short, this guide giving only a paragraph or two to what will probably amount to the most important section of the entire interviewing process, though they did good to include the section at all.

Unfortunately, it's hard to get to that point if you can't find a lot of job openings, and their sources are simply too far gone for me to consider this book a high quality recommendation, particularly when you consider that this information makes up almost a quarter of the book.

If they update this book to include more information about the job hunting process in 2008 and beyond, then this will be an excellent resource. As it is, this book barely qualifies as a quality reference. Barely.

4.0 out of 5 stars good suppliment material, July 7, 2008
This review is from: How to Get the Teaching Job You Want: The Complete Guide for College Graduates, Teachers Changing Schools, Returning Teachers and Career Changers (Paperback)
Take what you want and leave the rest, this book shares some great insite into the successful job search. Although I have not taken every suggestion to heart, it has truly helped me to gain an even better understanding of the interview process and gain some knowledge into just what an interviewer may be looking for. I say it is worth having, I am satisfied.
