There's Truth between these covers!,
By
This review is from: How to Get Your Husband to Talk to You (Paperback)
As a man, the best thing I can say about this book is that it is dead on correct about men. I have no idea if it will bring comfort to wives or even change to marriages, but at least you can trust that the information you are getting here is normal, down-to-earth common sense about men from a woman's perspective (the authors are women), and from there you can do with it what you want. The book's audience is young wives in their 30s or late 20s, and this reflects a situation I am seeing so often in this (my) generation - both partners begin with seperate careers and consider each other equals, yet the husband and wife gradually shift towards more traditional division of labor (stay-at-home mom, bread-winning dad, blah blah) as the marriage solidifies - not out of obligation but out of choice and trust. The example stories in this book clearly show young busy mothers with healthy social lives and husbands who watch football and are busy trying to succeed at their new careers. The men are quiet and their wives are curious and caring, period. No big mysteries, just age old sexual misunderstandings. This isn't a "marriage-in-crisis" book, but rather a manual on how to fine tune your relationship from the position of an already loving (but perhaps not perfect) marriage. It suggests understanding of men from the woman's part, and doesn't ask that men change or understand you at all. Thus this book is largely intended for you to love your husband (even more than you already do) by learning about his basic nature and enhancing your relationship with him. From there you can better communicate your needs to him, and through his naturaly desire to help you, he will strive to meet those needs. (a lot harder than it sounds, I know) The authors give God a minor yer important role in this process, and anyone with or without a spiritual leaning will find this book complimentary. The authors don't strike old fashioned "woman is her husband's servant" stances, but they aren't feminists either - they portray men as they are, and suggest you improve your marriage, not your man. So, if you are struggling to come to grips with the stereotypical weaknesses of males and perhaps your mate, this isn't the book for you. The writing itself is very focused - chapters often lasting only 3-4 pages, and each ends with a short "recap" sentance. This method makes the book very accessable, with over a hundred chapters for you to quickly find some comfort for whatever problem is bother you. One piece of advice, it's in the book but might be overlooked or underemphasized: read the chapter titled "Don't Make Him a 'Project'" and take its lessons to heart, as the right knowledge with the wrong emphasis can backfire on you.

Some good ideas, but tone is a bit degrading to women,

I really wanted to like this book...however, the tone really makes a woman feel a bit like a doormat. There is little encouragement of actual being "real" with the person you are with. Intelligent women appreciate advice that allows them to be open and honest about their needs and to be able to compromise. The focus of this book seems to leave this out.

This book completely opened my eyes!,

I was very hesitant to order this book being that my husband and I do "talk". However, I felt as if we had not have a normal conversation like when people date. We didn't talk about goals, interests, feelings, or anything else that came from the heart. We were merely exchanging essential information, such as, "Please pick up milk on your way home", or "What time will you be home?". I began to wonder why we were even together because although I wasn't unhappy, I was not truly happy. Little things got in the way like he wouldn't remember to take out the garbage, or he would forget birthdays, but yet he could remember very insignificant things that had nothing to do with him or myself. Upon receiving this book I felt like I finally had an answer, a complete answer. Most of the things discussed in this book can be found elsewhere, but only in bits and pieces. Why not get the whole solution, and from a Christian perspective? If you employ these solutions to your real problems, whether big or small, your relationship can turn around like magic!

Husband Talked,
By
This review is from: How to Get Your Husband to Talk to You (Paperback)
My goal was to read a chapter ever-other evening, and apply what I had read. It offered good, inconspicuous ways to open the door of communication with my husband. He didn't always say much, but I noticed he would later begin talking about other things that he didn't talk much about before. I think it was a way to change what we normally talk about. It offered suggestions on positive things to say, which (isn't a surprise that it) offered positive results. I recommend this book if you're willing to take the steps to improve your relationship with your husband.

Great book! The viewpoints are so true to real life communication between husand / wife, male / female. I refer to it all the time now. I purchased copy for a girlfriend and have also recommended to several others.

Only for the "good wife",

This review is from: How to Get Your Husband to Talk to You (Paperback)
I am sure there are women who will appreciate this book but it just wasn't for me. I found it difficult to swallow some of the advice such as, if you have stopped cooking dinner for your husband then get back in the kitchen. I think you have to be in the right mindset for this book as it is entirely focused on what you need to do differently as the wife. For me it was difficult to get through everything I need to do without asking my husband to take any action steps. Hopefully there are wives out there that can appreciate this book more than I have.

This book is invaluable.
I learned more about myself from this book than any other book I have ever read. The book encourages women to look at their own behaviors first and the rest (getting your husband to talk to you) will follow. A must have! I wish I had had this book many years ago...it would have saved me much frustration.

"How to Get Your Husband to Talk to You" is one of the most helpful marriage books I've ever read. It gives practical advice you can use to immediately change your relationship.
Even if you have no problems in the area of communication, the sage advice will teach you a lot about how to be even happier in your marriage. Each chapter is only two to three pages long so you can read a few chapters a day while putting relevant ideas into practice. While this is written for Christian women, the advice will work no matter what you believe. This book will work best for women who have a dominant feminine energy who are married to men with a dominant male energy. This book also works best when you jot down notes while you are reading and put the advice into practice over one to two weeks. What I appreciated most about this book is how it gives a woman full control over her destiny. The idea about taking out the garbage (instead of nagging) is worth the price of the book and will solve many arguments. I now take out the garbage when I go to get the mail and there are no more arguments. My only complaint is that the authors didn't give ideas on what a husband could do instead of jobs he hates. In my marriage we each have jobs to make things fair. The chapters on being a better listener are also life changing. All I can say is that communication is essential if you want to stay married and this book will give you the tools to take charge of your married life. Ladies, this one tips the scales!,
By Grace "da wife" (La Porte, IN USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: How to Get Your Husband to Talk to You (Paperback)
I love this book! Pray for God to soften your heart ladies and invest in your husbands! The title was really a bit strong, but once I opened it I realized what a practical help it could be.
The chapters are very short and quick reads and the material is very right on! I chuckled as I read the first couple of chapters and shared them with my husband...he chuckled too because it is absolutely true. God in His wisdom designed men and women very differently and it is a wise investment in your own marriage to get a little "heads up!" Some of the wavelengths we set off can be totally misinterpreted by our mates. Keep and open mind and have fun chatting with your hubbies! |
