This review is from: How I Got Over: Apollo Records Sessions (Audio CD)
Sun Records was to Elvis. what Apollo Records were to Mahalia.basic music lots of guts and emotion, an artist on the thrush hold of world dominance
of their genre.

5.0 out of 5 stars THE TRUE MAHALIA, July 26, 2002
This review is from: How I Got Over: Apollo Records Sessions (Audio CD)
These recordings represent Mahalia Jackson the major gospel and spiritual singer, not the traduced Mahalia of the Columbia era. How could they not? They were made for her core, true audience, the African-American church people of the US, not for some notional mass-audience. As such they (like Mahalia) are peerless.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent initiation to a fabulous singer., December 23, 1998
By A Customer
This two-cd set captures the raw and earthy power of a fabulous singer. She sings with such emotional feeling and intensity that you are truly moved by the experience. All of the songs are terrific, but 'In The Upper Room', 'His Eye Is On The Sparrow' and 'The Lord's Prayer' are my favorites. If you want to hear gospel music performed with unbridled intensity, this is highly recommended.
