A classic Elvis Presley album, cut at the May 1966 studio sessions in Nashville, the first under the supervision of producer Felton Jarvis, who would be fundamental in the latter part of Elvis' career. Released amidst a series of formula movie soundtracks, the inspired "How Great Thou Art" appeared as a beacon of hope and the harbinger of artistic revitalization that would eventually result in Elvis' comeback of 1968/69. The album, grouping 12 traditional religious songs recorded at the May 1966 session, plus "Crying In The Chapel" from 1960, is a treat from start to end. Outstandingly sung and superbly crafted, it earned Elvis a Grammy Award. Highly recommended.

I'm so addicted to this CD it isn't funny.I know when most people think of Elvis Presley they think of Rock N'Roll, but he was a very talented and versatile entertainer and did manage to do some spirituals as well. This one in particular is my favourite, and I like to play it when I'm dressing for work in the morning and this allows the music to stay in my head right through the day. Sung with deep devotion with that smooth velvet voice; I just I love this CD and recommend it for those who have not tried the spiritual side of Elvis. A wonderful gift for a friend!!! Heather P. Buy It For the "Storms of Life",

This album of gospel standards, earnestly and expertly delivered by Elvis, has helped me immensely to cope with the grief I experienced when my both of my parents passed away (9 years apart). Listening to the beautiful "Stand By Me" never fails to bring a tear to my eye, even when I've not just recently experienced a personal trauma. Other highlights are "In the Garden," "Farther Along," "Where Could I Go But To The Lord" and "Where No One Walks Alone." If you're even a casual Elvis fan I would recommend buying this album of "spiritual salve" if you will to help you through the "storms of life" that we're all bound to encounter.

This is Elvis Presley's second complete gospel album. Elvis was never more inspired than when he was singing gospel songs. This CD gives more evidence of the truth of that statement. All Elvis fan should love this CD, even if they are not religious.

A Standout Presley album of the 1960s.,

A well-produced, well-crafted album released in the midst of many poorly mixed formula (movie soundtrack) offers of the period. From the first few bars of the (opening) title song the listener sits forward, sensing that something significant is happening in his/her listening experience. His performance on that track and many others should be heard by all music enthusiasts. I decline from delivering 5 stars because despite the tasteful A & R and the flawless arranging Elvis' does not sound as energetic as on previous and future Gospel recordings, especially on the uptempo tunes: he seems to defer to the other singers and musicians on a these numbers. Ofcourse the material has deep meaning for him and is handled in a very respectful way. I just sense a slight tentativeness in his approach, perhaps due to a certain self-consciousness with regard to the placement of the record among the above-mentioned Hollywood entries.

When one loses a loved one, one reaches out to the spiritual. Listening to this beautiful album of gospel music is truly comforting. First the voice is wonderful and full of feeling. And second, the songs are inspirational. The first song "How Great Thou Art" sets the tone of reverence, which is continued with "Somebody Bigger Than You and I." "Farther Along" conveys the message that one day we will gain insight into our life here on earth. At journey's end, we will come to understand. "Stand By Me" and "Without Him" are pleas for the help and support we need in times of trouble. And a particular favorite is "Where Could I Go But To The Lord" because of the beat and the theme, that in a world of temptation, where can one find refuge but in the Lord. In your private hours, when friends and family are no longer around you, and you're alone, close your eyes and listen to this CD. It's like a prayer.

I have owned this as a record album since it was released in the early 60's, I think. It's great...one of my all time favorites. If you don't want to spend $26 for the Amazing Grace CD I don't think you will be disappointed with this one.

One of the best gospel albums...,
By Martin 13 (Slovenia) - See all my reviews
This review is from: How Great Thou Art (Audio CD)
How Great Thou Art is the second gospel album Elvis recorded and the only album between 1966 and 1968 that was not a soundtrack.
Maybe even better than his first one His Hand In Mine. The Jordanaires and The Imperials Quartet joined their voices together on this album. Elvis arranged few songs like Run On and Farther Along. Crying In The Chappel is not a gospel song but it fits, Stand By Me is a wonderful song just like Somebody Bigger Than You And I. Elvis sings great and the Floyd Cramer's piano is great. You don't have to be religious to like this album, but maybe you'll become...he, he, he,...
