Book Description

In boardrooms and lecture halls, on the field and at home, strong female leaders are making a statement around the globe. In HOW GREAT WOMEN LEAD Bonnie St. John and her teenage daughter, Darcy Deane, explore the qualities that motivate some of the world's most powerful women. Through engaging, out-of-the-spotlight interchanges, the authors discover commonly held values, behaviors, and attitudes, as well as the subtle, special skills inherent in female leaders.

From the ethics of Dr. Condoleeza Rice to the fortitude of Hillary Rodham Clinton to the enthusiasm of Teach for America founder Wendy Kopp and the discipline of Geena Davis, each woman in this book shares the exciting story of her rise to the top and the unique qualities it took to get there.

Editorial Reviews

"I have been an avid student of leadership for nearly 40 years, reading thousands of books on leaders from all walks of life and on the general subject of leadership excellence. This is the first book in this territory where my first thought was to share it with my wife and daughter. Bonnie and Darcy have created a fresh conversation about leadership from a woman's perspective which is well crafted and very much needed. I highly recommend it."

---Douglas R. Conant, retired president and CEO, Campbell Soup Company, New York Times Bestselling author of TouchPoints

"Bonnie and Darcy have created a new genre: bringing together inspired narrative with valuable advice from some of the most influential women of our time. This mother-daughter adventure gives us a firsthand account of the journey future female leaders will experience as they embrace the wisdom, strength and influence from those that came before them. As a mother of two daughters, I loved the book!"

---Rohini Anand, senior vice president and global chief diversity officer, Sodexo

"Bonnie is one of the five most inspiring women in America." (Brian Williams, NBC Nightly News)

"Bonnie St. John has, against all odds, found great joy in her life. And rather than hoarding it...she generously shares the treasure." (Jeannette Walls, New York Times bestselling author of The Glass Castle)

"How Strong Women Pray is a powerful book that teaches us valuable lessons about prayer, about ourselves and about God's open heart toward each one of us" (-Debbie Macomber, author of Knit Together: Discover God's Pattern for Your Life)

"With all the things we have to worry about in the world today--terrorists, the crises on Wall Street, and global warming-- Live Your Joy leaves you feeling stronger, more resilient, and more energized so you can feel in charge of your life." (Joan Lunden, author and TV personality)

"Bonnie's life is proof that we can all be happy no matter what. Read Live Your Joy to walk a while alongside her and learn how to do it." (Marci Shimoff, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Happy for No Reason)

So many interview compilations present the stories of women leaders -- and put the burden on the reader to pull out the highlights and critical points. This is not that book! The beauty of HOW GREAT WOMEN LEAD is that the leadership profiles - of women like Sheryl Sandberg, Hillary Clinton, Geena Davis, and Condoleeza Rice to name a few - contain only carefully picked advice and stories. As a reader, this makes you keen to keep reading on and keeps you engaged as each new woman is introduced. The background "story" is also compelling: after all, how often do a mother and teenage daughter set out to learn about leadership together? My favorite element of the book is hearing the reactions to the interviews through the eyes of both a teenage young woman - as well as her remarkable and accomplished mother, a woman who's faced lots of adversity and triumphed. Yes, it's every mother's dream that her young daughter would get an education like the interview experiences presented in this book. But by sharing the best nuggets with all of us, Bonnie St. John and Darcy Dean make each of us feel like maybe we were in the interview room too.

1.0 out of 5 stars Nice Attempt but Missed the Mark May 22, 2012
I was excited to read this book because of the topic. I love to learn about the thinking and decisions of successful women. A book like this is meant to offer the reader that intimate access rarely given. I wanted to really like this book but it disappointed me so much. The "meat" I was looking for was buried in extraneous and fluffy narrative about the authors' agendas and dialogue outside these coveted interviews. It proved to be such a distraction that it was very difficult to get through the book. I wish they just highlighted the actual interviews so I could skip to them directly. I see the cleverness of the whole Mother/Daughter angle but this book really fell flat.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Very Inspiring Glimpse June 14, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This book is an easy read and the interviews with these amazing women are very inspiring. There is a lot of fluff and a little bit of gloating, but the interviews are truly worth the read. I was very inspired by what those amazing women said and achieved and to get a glimpse at their struggles and triumphs and their candid responses was invaluable. I think they did a great job with the book and I definitely recommend it. I love the fact they interviewed a variety of types of people, across culture, career field, age, etc. Women young and old will be able to relate to these remarkable leaders. If I had a daughter, I would absolutely get her a copy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Learning to Lead - Experiences from Women Leaders July 23, 2012
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
I have been searching for a book on women and leadership for quite a well and was overjoyed to find a book that focused on the different types of women leaders and the different ways that they lead! I found the book to be very inspirational and insightful! Whether leading a multi-billion dollar organization, a global non-profit organization, a country or a family, this book provides a bird's eye view of the passion of women leaders and the impact that they are having on society. What made it even more meaningful was that it was also seen from a young woman's eyes - it opened the door for the next generation of women leaders to feel empowered and proud of what they can accomplish. I highly recommend this for women (and men) of all ages!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent! May 23, 2012
I saw Bonnie St. John promoting this book on Tavis Smiley's show and immediately ran out to buy it. I was not at all disappointed. In fact, I was greatly inspired! It was very well written, thoughtful and necessary. It was just the type of meaningful literature I've been seeking to read. At times, I even found myself moved to tears from the powerful words being spoken by such remarkable women. Truly a must read!

Women's leadership is such a rich topic. Following the authors, an accomplished, exceptional woman and her teenage daughter, in exploring women's leadership is captivating. A particular interview in How Great Women Lead with Amy Pascal inspired us to challenge our friends and readers to find their gift; the thing that's different about them that will make them succeed. This book motivates us to continue supporting women leaders and change the way women think about themselves professionally. We thank Bonnie St. John and Darcy Deane for writing this enlightening book and wish them continued success!
