About the Author

Binx Selby is an inventor whose biochemistry research goes back to his days as a student, when his undergraduate work earned him an early invitation to join Sigma Xi, the scientific and engineering research society. A graduate of the University of Colorado, he went on to start over a dozen companies around his diverse inventions. These included the NBI word processor, which was one of the first personal computers, and the PureCycle on-site total water recycling and purification system, which was featured in media as diverse as Walter Cronkite’s science show on TV to National Geographic and R&D Magazine’s Top 100. His latest invention is an anti-inflammatory dietary protocol which he created in 2006 to re-balance the biochemistry in our body so that our metabolism can work at its best, in the way our genome or body “blueprint” wants it to. Grounded in science, this protocol has been shown in extensive medical data to give two-week results in reversing cardiovascular and metabolic diseases related to low-level chronic inflammation in the body. When not blitzing through thousands of scientific articles or designing research to solve problems, Binx can be found riding his bike, singing in choirs, or doing comedy with a local theater group.

Having experienced the results documented in the book, it has been a re-inspiration to see a compilation of both the anecdotal and the hard data that is bringing this nutritional approach to broader scrutiny. I was a skeptic before our family did the protocol a couple of years ago, but we saw first-hand that the promised drops in triglycerides, LDL cholesterol, and arterial stiffness were possible in just that two-week period, and ongoing improvements in general feeling of well-being. We have permanently modified our approach to eating and thinking about food as a result. The possible role of lectin proteins is only one of the provocative innovations in Selby and Fong's book that begin to put the picture together as to why most other supposedly heart-healthy, anti-inflammatory diets are not nearly as effective nor lasting as a lifestyle. While a lot more research needs to be done (and hopefully will get more mainstream funding), the early data published here should serve to get the ball seriously rolling. It's great to see it all together in one place: clear reasoning behind each element pf the protocol, step-by-step introduction, practical solutions to eating out, easy-to-make and delicious recipes, actual hard-number studies: evidence--not just advice.

I have had a weight problem for most of my life, like many people. I have gone up and down but could never sustain a substantial weight loss. I also developed some unexplained pain and fatigue that was eventually attributed to fibromyalgia. When my husband and I went on the protocol, we had the following results: I lost 60 pounds, and kept it off for 2 years; my pain and fatigue diminished substantially, My husband's weight went down, his heart is healthy (he had a valve replacement 12 years ago but had some cholesterol issues that have disappeared), and we have more energy for the 4 and 6 year old grandchildren that we babysit.
It would seem apparent that the individuals who have stayed with the life style changes have benefited greatly. The one thing that is important to me is the start of each day with the omelet. While recipes are helpful, creative USE of the ingredients is more important. We have learned to make delicious omelets, wonderful drinks, a wide variety of steamed vegetables to vary taste and texture. The point is that when one follows the protocol, the important part is what one leaves out: sugars, grains, and many carbs that cause weight gain and other health issues and leave one hungry. I was never hungry, I lost weight weekly and I was energetic enough to deal with middle and high school English students - and that does take energy! And for those days that I did cheat, I found it easy to get back on the protocol. Since coffee, red wine, and dark chocolate are allowed, what's not to love about it. It's not about the recipes, (and plenty are included in the book) It's about the lifestyle.

This is such a fun read! I loved the story of how Binx and Linda unlocked secrets of what certain foods do to our bodies. Each year, we seem to learn more and more about how best to eat for optimal health and this book pushes that envelope ahead, with impressive documentation of results achieved by many who followed the protocol. We bought copies to send to several friends who are very interested in maintaining (or regaining) good health.

Over the past several years, hundreds of people have benefited from Binx Selby's "BalancePoint" diet protocol. This latest book, co-written with his wife, Linda Jade Fong, is a personal narrative describing the original events leading to the creation of the protocol and the subsequent findings based on actual data. Although the protocol itself is a precise biochemical formula of managed calories -- very high fat, minimum protein and low-glycemic carbohydrates - the book manages to steer clear of tedious scientific jargon and reads more like a dietary whodunit!

As Selby aggressively sought to find the key to lowering his own high cholesterol in just two weeks, his inventor's brain also began to unlock the riddles of many other health problems, and BalancePoint was born. Now, after six years of study, Selby and Fong describe how the protocol dramatically reduces chronic inflammation in the body, the cause of many of our age-related, chronic diseases, ranging from high cholesterol and blood sugar to stiff arteries, obesity, and arthritic pain. And these results happen all at once because the protocol allows the body to do its own healing and maintain its chemical balance through a precise balance of food types -- thus addressing the source of the problem. Fong and Selby explain why some of the protocol's seemingly counter-intuitive elements work so effectively; why eating a high fat diet helps to reduce rather than increase weight ("fight fat with fat"). In fact, weight reduction is one of the most dramatic by-products of the protocol, even though not its original objective. And the results show that the BalancePoint protocol is virtually universal, working for about 95% of the people who try it.
