Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Rabbis Isaacs, who leads a congregation in New Jersey, and Olitzky, the director of the School of Education at Hebrew Union College, present a clear and succinct guide to common Jewish religious and social practice, from the fundamentals of prayer to how to dance the hora. Each entry gives the source of the custom or practice (usually a passage from the Hebrew Bible or Talmud), basic steps, key words and phrases, and suggestions for further reading. While The Jewish Catalog (1973) remains the best and most comprehensive single source, much of the information presented here is hard to find, and the clarity of the rabbis' presentation makes this a worthwhile addition to basic Judaica collections as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book for Jews and non-Jews alike. Easy format., November 3, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: The How-To Handbook for Jewish Living (Paperback)
This book answers all the questions. The Sabbath, all Holidays, and many details are explained in easy to follow form. It takes all the "fear" out of the unknown for the "Jew by choice." I am able to teach our son and my Jewish husband with confidence. I have recommended this book to the local synagogue, Jewish federation and Temple, as a hand-out to families. I wish I would have found it 18 years ago.

5.0 out of 5 stars Judge This One By The Cover, January 30, 2000
This review is from: The How-To Handbook for Jewish Living (Paperback)
The How To Handbook For Jewish Living is as easy to use and straight-forward as the title would suggest. I am in the process of becoming Jewish and this is by far the easiest book I've found to get what I want. How To is to the point, you can locate prayers, rituals, dances and many other broad topics easily without sifting through voluminous chapters of prose. On each topic there are also handy lists of sources, keywords and suggestions for further reading. I only recently purchased How To but I can tell that it will be a useful source for years to come.
