This review is from: How High the Moon (Audio CD)
Les Paul is one of the greatest musicians to ever record music, plus he did invent the solid-body electric guitar, a guitar genius, and this CD from the fine folks of ASV in England serves up 30 gems from 1937-1951 in great sound featuring stuff from his jazz trio that recorded on Decca, the early hits with Mary Ford (the rest are available on the Best of The Capitol Masters CD, a track with the Andrews Sisters included entitled "Rumors Are Flying" and a version of "It's Been a Long, Long Time," with Bing Crosby singing and Les playing the guitar. The version of the Frankie Yankovic hit "Just Because" that features Les not only playing guitar, but also singing and playing the harmonica he recorded for Montgomery Ward as "Rhubarb Red" is worth the price of this CD alone. The production on many of Les's recordings is way ahead of its time as he did multi-tracking the guitar before anyone else did, plus he influenced the late, great, Chet Atkins and recorded two albums with Chet on RCA: Chester and Lester and Guitar Monsters, which One Way has issued as a twofer that is available right here at Amazon.com. This is an essential CD for all guitar music fans and Les Paul fans. This CD is not all you need to know about Les Paul's genius and talent but it serves up a perfect introduction to his talent.
