Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

K Up-- These two prize-winning entries in Raintree's writing contest for children share a number of similarities. They're both set in Hawaii, and they feature folkloric treatments of environmental themes. The illustrations are in varying styles in vivid colors with heavy black lines. In Miloli's Orchids , a young girl struggles to save her island's totem orchids from an erupting volcano. Worth noting are the young author's research in preparing her text, the strong female character, and the attractive designs bordering each page's text. How Honu the Turtle Got His Shell is an original pourquoi tale. Honu's animal friends try to rid him of a shell stuck onto his back by children playing on the shore, until he finds out that the burden is also a blessing. The author has smoothly incorporated a number of Hawaiian words into her text. The illustrations are more stylized than those in Miloli. There is little information about the contest itself, the number of competitors, or about the criteria by which the young writers were judged. Two useful items for inclusion in programs serving gifted children, for students of creative writing, or for local history. --Barbara Hutcheson, Greater Victoria Public Library, B.C., Canada
