This review is from: How to Be a Hostage and Live (Paperback)
How to be a Hostage and Live by Captain Frank A. Bolz, Jr. is a quick and easy read that will provide you with information on survival tactics to use should you become a hostage. Bolz was the Chief Hostage Negotiator with the New York Police Department (NYPD) where he handled more than 285 hostage and hijacking incidents resulting in the release of 850 hostages with no loss of life. Impressive results for a high risk environment where life and death hangs in the balance.
In this basic and easy to read book Bolz provides information on the following:
* 15 points of information to remember should you be taken hostage
* Who could become a hostage? FYI, anyone can become a hostage!
* When and where hostage situations take place
* Hijackings and trickery - that is trickery against the hijackers. For the most part Bolz does not recommend the use of trickery as the captors may respond with a great deal of violence.
* How hostage situations happen
* Types of hostage takers such as the professional criminal, emotionally disturbed person, and the politically motivated terrorist (note this book was written in 1987, well before the events of 09-11-01)
* Coping with long-term incarceration - tips include remaining flexible, controlling your fear and anxiety level, having patience and courage, and maintaining your self-respect.
* Media and coping with reporters
*The Do's and Don'ts
*The Stockholm Syndrome
*Violence Death or Panic
*Avoiding the Problem
*Kidnappings vs. Hostage Situations
*Victimology
*The Negotiator
*The Rescue
This is a rock bottom basic book on what you should do if you become a hostage along with some extremely basic information on avoiding becoming a hostage. If you are looking for a simple, clear, and easy to read book without all of the technical detail then this is a good starting point. The book is geared toward non law enforcement personnel.
