Now in its Fourth Edition,
By
This review is from: How Humans Evolved, Fourth Edition (Paperback)
Any textbook that makes it to four editions has to be a good one, in use at a lot of places and one that fits the current collected wisdom of the subject. I say this bit about the current wisdom because all of the sciences are moving forward at an extremely rapid rate. New theories, new discoveries make science change.
This book is rare, if not unique, in how it presents controversy. Some scientists believe this, some believe that. Most authors tend to have beliefs that lean one way or the other. In this book the tendency is instead to present both views and give the evidence for each. This approach is more adapted to how science really works, but it is unusual, especially in a book intended for undergraduate use. This book is somewhat of a combination between anthropology and evolutionary biology. As such it brings a better understanding of how human beings became what they are today, one slow step at a time. It also presents all of the known evidence from both field observations and laboratory testing. It shows a picture of Lucy's bones, and it goes into DNA and gene theory. It is complete a text as you are goign to find.

Good Overview of Evolutionary Theory,
By
This review is from: How Humans Evolved (Paperback)
This book was the required text for an anthropology course I took recently. The book explained things well and actually made complex biological concepts simple to understand, even for a undergraduate. It provides a very detailed and easy to understand overview of human evolution and the biology of human culture. I would recommend this book.

Great textbook,

I was assigned this book for my physical anthropology class. Overall, it's very easy to understand. THe authors explain difficult concepts well for the most part, and they usually include diagrams or pictures to reinforce the point. Granted the chapters on genetics weren't the easiest things on earth to understand, but I had a firm biology background from high school so it was not an issue. The authors also do a good job of making the concepts very interesting and alive, a difficult task for a college textbook.Overall, it's a great book and very informative.

Excellent Overview Of Human Evolution,
By
This review is from: How Humans Evolved (Paperback)
Boyd & Silk do an excellent job of covering the broad expanse of human evolution. The examples, explanations, illustrations and periodic anecdotes are very well-organized and cogent. I especially enjoyed the coverage of opposing points of view and the pros/cons for each.
The one thing I was in disagreement over though was their inclusion of Koko as an example of how gorillas can be taught human language skills (in this case American Sign Language). It's been observed that at least some of what Koko appeared to be communicating via signing was the result of unconscious nonverbal prompting on the part of Francine Patterson, hence why many linguists are skeptical of using Koko as an example of animal use of ASL. Besides that (which the authors may just simply have not known about) the book is INCREDIBLY well-researched and honest in it's examination of modern-day evolutionary theory. Highly recommended for anyone interested in evolution, biology or anthropology.

Terrific introduction to the study of human evolution,

This review is from: How Humans Evolved, Fourth Edition (Paperback)
This is a terrific introduction (a textbook) to human evolution. It is written in a very accessible fashion--not just students but those in the larger public interested in the mechanism and products of human evolution will find this a useful volume.
The first part, of course, focuses on the evolutionary process, with a nice introduction to adaptation by natural selection and to genetics. Other introductory chapters introduce readers to the nature of species, phylogeny, and the synthetic theory of evolution. The discussion is well written and understandable. There are many examples to illustrate key points. The next section explores primate evolution and behavior, to provide context for understanding human evolution and behavior. The chapter on the evolution of primate social behavior is especially helpful. Next, the authors take a look at the evolutionary lineage of humans, from primates to early hominids, to the genus Homo, to Homo sapiens. The text goes on to examine how language evolved, as well as evolution in modern humans (e.g., genetic diversity, the human life cycle, human behavior, and mate choice and parenting). All in all, a nice introduction to the study of human evolution. Well worth taking a look at. . . .

Great textbook,

I never thought that I would enjoy biological anthropology, let alone understand it well, but this text has made the class easy and even fun (seriously, I'm not joking). The book is layed out simply with outlines at the beginning of each chapter and clear subheadings within the chapters to help get across the main points. The points are all connected together nicely to leave the reader with a complete picture of human evolution.

Decent Textbook,
By CollegeSon (Santa Barbara, CA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: How Humans Evolved, Fourth Edition (Paperback)
In the introductory college course in physical anthropology that my professor used this text in, the focus was largely on his lecture and not on reading the text. That being said, from the times that I used the text, I saw that it was well-written and made use of charts, graphs, etc. to give context to its explanations. Overall it was a very good textbook, but I only gave it 4/5 stars because it could be "wordy" at times (it took two pages to explain what could have been explained in two paragraphs). Other than that, a good purchase, seeing as I HAD to buy it for the course.

Now in its fifth edition,

This review is from: How Humans Evolved, Fourth Edition (Paperback)
This fascinating book is now in its fifth edition since late 2008. But somehow in the page for the fourth edition Amazon did not show this in "Other Edition". And judged from the current sales rank in May 2009, 4th edition sells much more than the 5th edition. I have not done a comparison between the two editions but you may want to check out the new edition with this link: How Humans Evolved: (Fifth Edition)

There's plenty of undergrad textbooks on the subject of physical anthropology, of varying quality. This, however, is by far the most theory-oriented, detailed, and clear. Thanks Boyd and Silk!
