YES to RES,
By "musiceditor2000" (San Diego, CA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: How I Do (Audio CD)
Res (actually pronounced "Reese") and Alicia Keys are two female contemporary urban/soul artists who are destined to be HUGE, and if you haven't yet heard of Res, you will...from track #1, Golden Boys, to the very last track, New York newcomer Res debuts with a CD that's consistent, high quality (songs, vocals, production) and quite special. Res is cool, hip, intelligent, talented and apart from the fact that she somewhat resembles Lauryn Hill, she's in the same calibre when it comes to sheer talent. if you're looking for some new, street soul, songs that mean something and accessible, yet blissfully superior music to what's currently out there, treat yourself to some RES!

Res is too damn unknown for someone as pretty and talented as she is. There's got to be a conspiracy. This is one of the top 5 albums ever made. I listen to it anytime I'm in the mood to be impressed by music. Its perfect. Its much different than a lot of other stuff, too. Res is pretty unique.

Res is quite the artist, who should be well respected for her skills. The thing that stands out to me about "Res" debut is her lyrics. If you listen closely, the words are saying something. It's refreshing to get away from the shake that thang, bling bling, lyrics. The other notable thing is that Res' style is more rock and roll than r&b. But if you're a broad minded music lover, you will appreciate this. A great CD all around.

I Love This CD!!!!,

I got this CD a year ago and it's one of my favorites. A Black artist who branches out and experiments with varying, eclectic sounds. The fact that music like hers doesn't get more airplay is the injustice of the mainstream music world. She runs rings around the likes of Ashanti. My favorite songs of the disc are "700 Mile Situation" and "If There Ain't Nothing." Although, I love the whole disc. It's definitely worth the investment.

How she does her own,

With the so-called "neo-soul" movement being in the forefront of music today, many of the artists' who fit under that umbrella, such as Jill Scott (deserverdly so) and Alicia Keys (less deservedly so...thus far) have been lauded by critics. Some people would be quick to put Res in that same category, but anyone doing so would just be revealing to the world that they are not even pretending to listen to her music. There may be some underlying similarities between the three artists' but only in the way that a dove and a bald eagle are similar. Res' music is very much a product of her own invention; a refreshing mix of funk, hip hop and who knows what else type of influences she has. She would be more comparable to Nelly Furtado (but in a less pop vein) with some Red Hot Chili Peppers thrown in. And Rick Rubin handling the production. Blessings to Res for doing her thing. I can only hope more people learn to appreciate it for what it is.

Seriously underrated,

I've owned this album for nearly four years and I can never grow tired of it. Res provides hip-hop beats, trip-hop grooves and smooth jams--all at once--while delivering Santi White's rock solid and truthful lyrics in a syrupy, raspy style I've never heard roll from anyone else's tongue. This album was released back in 2001 and as I said before, is timeless. How I Do is more than "neo-soul", it blatantly forces you to redefine what "black music"(aka the type of music black people are "allowed" to sing). I echo another reviewer's sentiments concerning her sophmore album: just like the wonderful Esthero, Res seems to be plagued by her label's lack of interest. Hopefully 2007 will see a new Res album! But in the meantime, pick this one up, I guarantee you won't be disappointed.

News on Res,

For those of us who are Res fans, I just saw that she has a cut on the "Akeelah and the Bee" soundtrack.
I saw Res in concert in 2002, opening for Musiq. The music was tight, she was a great entertainer, and . . . well, the woman is simply gorgeous! Her act paired together nicely with Musiq. Now for the album. Very strong, eclectic, interesting. I am surprised she did not do better with it sales-wise, but I consider it a hidden gem.

Res' How I Do has been in heavy rotation in my stereo since I bought about 2 or 3 years ago. Being a Philly native, I picked up her cd, not having heard one song and have been hooked ever since. I love her sound and she has a voice different from most soul singers, yet is still able to capture the emotion and feel of the genre without any problems. I'd have to say, every single song on the cd is AMAZING, though if I were to pick a favorite it would be Tsunami. I am anxiously awaiting Res' sophomore album, although I don't see how she could possibly follow up with an album to top How I Do.

I just decided to write this review, because the longer I own this album, the more I realize what a main stay it is in my collection. I constantly go back to it. It didnt take long to learn the Lyrics, and it has a nice flow. She is really hard to catergorize. There are elements of just about every type of music. Hip-Hop, R&B, Rock , Trip Hop, and even a little Punk sound on the hidden track. If you like Esthero, or Les Nubians, chances are you will probably enjoy Res as well. I really look forward to another record.
