What a great book!,
This review is from: How I Eat Without Wheat (Paperback)
I bought this book because my nephew has celiac and I wanted to help my daughter (age 4) understand why her young cousin can't eat the same gluten-based products as her (e.g., Cheerios). The story and illustrations are delightful. She likes me to read it to her at bedtime but I didn't know if she really comprehended the concept of gluten-free until we were making a snack one day and she picked up the Goldfish crackers and said, "Zack can't eat this because it has wheat in it -- do they make these whithout wheat?" I highly recommend this book for young children with celiac and their families.

Great Help for Wheat Challenged Kids!,

My son has Celic disease, and this book really helped him laugh at himself. It also helped him understand his life can be normal without wheat. The pictures in this book were really funny and made him laugh.

Wonderful Book!,
This review is from: How I Eat Without Wheat (Paperback)
This book has been great reading for my 7 y.o. daughter who was diagnosed with Celiac last year. She has even shared the book with her friends so they can learn about Celiac too. We hope Karen Fine continues to write inspirational books like this.

This book is proof that even with so many children's books out there, there's still a need for the perfect book to meet its exact audience. Three cheers for a book that will change lives! Well done!

"How I Eat Without Wheat" is an absolutely wonderful approach to helping young children with gluten intolerance understand why they have to eat differently than other children. I only wish it had been available for my daughter's family when my grandson was diagnosed with celiac disease at age two! Karen Fine obviously has a great deal of insight into the issues presented by celiac disease and I hope this book will reach every family dealing with this condtion.

Great Book,

I bought this book as my children and I are gluten intolerant. It can be hard for small children to understand that they can't eat all the food they want at a birthday party etc. And also harder for their friends and class mates to understand. My 4 year old loves this book so much he wants me to read it to him every week. 'It's a book just about me' he says. I also gave a copy to my sons teachers so it could be shared at school and spoken about. Before this we had a case where one of my boys ate something because he was being pressurized by some children in his class. He was so ill that day I had to take him home from school. I think this book has helped the other children understand also and not force them to share lunchs and snacks. The authors website and blog is also great. [...]

Finally, a great book for kids learning to live with celiac disease. As a family doctor, I see many patients with celiac--I will be sure to keep a few copies in my office.

Posted March 21, 2010, 2:47 PM EST: Young children are not small adults, and explaining "why" and "why not" regarding dietary limitations needs to fit a child's perception of good health and habits. This book does an excellent job of putting the reasons for gluten-free food into a context to which a small child can easily relate.

My nephew does not have Celiac, but has another condition which makes him feel "different" from other children. It's great to express to kids that you can have limitations, but you can find ways to work with them. I love the illustration of the globe with a bunch of kids on it - it helps to know that even when we feel like an outsider, we are not alone, there are plenty of others like us.

My daughter loves this book. We eat wheat but love books that introduce nutrition and health concepts. Highly recommend it!
