4.0 out of 5 stars Very Relatable and Informative August 4, 2011
By Mandy
Since this is more of a self-help guide, I'm not going to be able to use my normal review format. Instead, I am going to start my review off with a question:

What, in your life, do you wish you could/would improve?

We all have our areas of life that we are unsatisfied with: work, marriage, self, etc. Raymond's book walks you through the steps you need to take in order to correct your problem areas.

I know what you're thinking: This is a standard self-help, boring book written by some know-it-all who uses terminology I can't understand. Besides, he doesn't know me. How could this book possibly help me?

First, the author is an every-day, down-to-earth man. Secondly, the book reads as if it is a friend talking to you, not some know-it-all. He begins by identifying the steps of the Improvement Process.

Stop rolling your eyes!

All good things are good because someone or something went through some form of process to make it/them that way.

Once the Improvement Process steps are identified, each step is given a chapter so that you can delve into the meanings of each step.

The last five or six chapters go in depth about each area of our life that we may need/want to improve. Practical, step-by-step instructions are given to make your desired changes achievable.

I'll be honest with you, I put off reading this book for a while because I thought this was going to be boring. I thought I would have to make myself finish it. I couldn't have been more wrong.

This is the first self-help book I've read where I actually grabbed a notebook, while reading the first chapter, so I could take notes. I will be applying the Improvement Process to my life. I also plan on buying several copies to give to people I know.

If you enjoy improving yourself and your quality of life, then I highly recommend you give this book a try.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Basic Book for Self Improvement April 9, 2011
If you are serious about self improvement but aren't quite sure where or how to start, this book is "must" reading. Looking at all the things we may wish to change, the job seems overwhelming and I think of cliché question, "How do you eat an elephant?" This books tells you how to go about self improvement the same way you go about eating an elephant - one step at a time.

Well organized and easy to read, this book will take you on a successful journey of self improvement if you follow its guidelines. It not only helps you decide on those areas of improvement to focus on, it also helps you establish measurement tools so you can track your progress. According to Scudder, "The secret to obtaining what you want out of life is a combination of positive, can-do thinking and always keeping a clear picture of what you want in your mind." He helps you do both of these things.

If you are a "seasoned self-improver" this book can serve as a review tool and let you measure how you are doing with the basics. Do you need a refresher in time management or a boost in strengthening your relationships? Can you use a little help getting your finances in order or encouragement to put on your sneakers and get some outdoor exercise? If so, this book is for you.

Once you have mastered the basics you have efficient and effective tools and can use them to identify deeper areas of needed self improvement and you have acquired the skills to continue this life-long endeavor in other areas.

I recommend this book to anyone who is serious about self improvement.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not normally into self-help... March 29, 2011
Like the title of the review says, I'm not normally into self-help style books, but I gave this one a shot. I was rather impressed by the simplicity and straight-forward advice from the author. It's a good quick read that isn't full of fluff - only good advice with the intent that really makes people put that little bit of extra thought into their daily life. This is written by a genuine person that is not just trying to market himself, but is really looking to help others. I'd recommend this book not just for self-help, but to anyone open to having some good insight on life.
