I've been out of school for almost two years and was really getting discouraged about not being able to find a job. I've heard so many great things about federal employment from the excellent benefits and flexible work schedules so I decided to start looking for federal jobs and gave this book a try. This book is loaded with excellent tips, tricks and examples directly from a federal insider. This book walks you through the entire hiring process from locating available positions to tailoring your resume and cover letters to negotiating salaries. Once I implemented the advice in this guide, I immediately started getting interviews with both federal and non-federal employers. I am now in a great and well paid position, much in part thanks to this book!

If you want a job in the federal government, buy this book -- either the hard-copy edition or in the equally excellent Kindle edition. Really. Don't even bother with getting a bunch of guidebooks and trying to sort through it all. For once, one book is all you will need to get the skinny on how to get that dream job, or a foot in the door on the path to your dream job. Whiteman knows all the ins and outs of what to do and what not to do, and she covers every base. Easily readable, actually really enjoyable prose, (not to be expected in a how to find a job book) and loads of excellent advice and guidance is what you will find here. She certainly has helped me!

And by the way, all of the material included in the CD of the hard-copy edition is also included in the Kindle edition of this book by hot links and a dedicated website. So the Kindle edition is just as excellent, complete and comprehensive as the hard-copy version.

I have never written a book review before, but this book deserves it. This book helped way beyond my schools already decent career center guides and helped me format my answers, make sure my resume matched the KSA questions and also the CD guide was a great way to save time in the already arduous process. Also this book was far easier to read than other guide books I purchased. Highly recommended.

This book is loaded with insightful insider tips that are not available anywhere else about every phase of the federal job market- including finding unadvertised openings, impressing hiring managers, negotiating salaries to quickly climbing the career ladder. After paying a professional to craft a "Federal" resume and receiving a "qualified" rating but no referrals many times over, I stumbled on this book. What an amazing find...and I didn't even realize it had a CD until I got home. The book gives not only step-by-step instructions for carrying out job searches within the Federal government, it shows alternate pathways and resources for parlaying related experience into an eventual Federal position. In implementing Lily's directions, I realized how my resume and cover letters had actually been under-representing me. I can't say enough about how important it is to do the brainstorming exercises, as well, because I remembered an entire block of experience in policy/advocacy that I had left out of my resume because it was volunteer work! I also found incredible value in the creative search strategies for finding openings that are not advertised on USAJOBS.

I was fortunate to have the opportunity to speak with Lily directly and, as a longtime Federal government employee, this lady really knows her stuff! It was also great to convey to her my 20 year dream of working in national health policy and discuss how I could make that happen.

If you are looking for a Federal job, even if you have to take a sideways route to get there, you absolutely cannot go wrong with this book.

This book is a great resource for effective advice on everything from creating the perfect resume and cover letter to interview tips that will get you the job. The tips provided are applicable to jobs in any sector but the book also includes great advice for professionals seeking government employment and, as mentioned by other reviewers, is written in a humorous and easy to read style. This has been a go to book for me and a number of my friends when applying for, and "landing", Federal jobs.

Almost 10 years ago I used the practical advice of this author's previous version of this book to land my first Government job and a subsequent job 3 years later. This new version updated version is right in step with the government higher trends and I am using it once again to navigate toward another job I have targeted in what is now a much more difficult federal job market to get jobs in general.

Great tool for applying for federal jobs, it has help me to put together a federal resume which is a big difference from private industry resumes, apply for federal jobs from various agencies I wasnt aware of, and help me to have a better understanding of the government terminology that is used in the vacancy announcements and how to prepare for interviews. It has help me to get on the eligible list as best qualified to be forwarded to a hiring official, before I got this book I was always put in a catagory as not qualified for the postions I applied for.
