If you like music to be fun, this is your choice.,

David Bromberg is a musical talent that for some reason has been relegated to a place of obscurity. His talent on string instruments is unquestioned, and his lyrics are hysterical. This album contains "Bullfrog Blues". This cut sums up everything that was hip in the late sixties, early seventies, and manages to do a pro-marijuana comment, anti-Hugh Hefner comment, mentions Kahlil Gibran, and somehow manages to tie this all into voyeurism and the blues. I have seen Bromberg twice in concert, and he performed "Will not Be Your Fool" each time with totally different lyrics. I do believe his version on this album is his bestinterpretation of this wondrful tune. Bromberg moves from country, to Delta blues to Electric blues, from mandalin to dobro to fiddle and seems to be master of all these strings. This is not music to be taken seriously, but music to listen to and realize how much fun music can actually be. What ever happened to David Bromberg?

Eclectic country/blues/rock guitarist best recorded showcase,

Here is the best recorded argument for David Bromberg's inclusion into the live music hall of fame. He changes styles, moods, tempos, yet the music never loses the edge. Bromberg and the band never waver from their sparkling musicianship, but the foremost impression they leave you with is not so much about how great they are, but how much a-kickin' fun you're having listening to them.

Nobody's given this album five stars, so I will. Another reviewer wrote "timeless". That's a great summation. I first bought this album as a nineteen y/o kid in 1977. I was in the Navy and read a review in Playboy magazine. (Hey, what else does a sailor have to do?) Since then this album, both the Live and Studio studio sides, have been on my favorites list. 'Nough said.

Bromberg at his best,

One of the best of Bromberg's albums. Bromberg has been around as a studio musician, backup singer/guitarist, and soloist for close to 40 years. For those not familiar with him, this is a great introduction to a self-described old, Jewish, overweight blues singer with extraordinary stage presence, much of which is on display in this CD - especially Bullfrog Blues, one of the great talking blues tracks you will ever hear. His version of "Come into my kitchen" is remarkable; his guitar supplies the lyrics you just imagine. For those who love him but have missed this CD, get it asap. (Wish I could say the same for volumne 2 of this set, which is a studio recording; not nearly as exciting).

this is easily David Bromberg's best albumwhich has something on it for every musical taste. The versatility of the musicians is amazing and their skills are very apparent on a great mixture of acoustic/electric country, folk, blues and rock tunes.I have seen David Bromberg about 3 times; the first as an oppening act for Dicky Betts. This was easily one of the BEST concerts I ever heard and seen.... must of been true for Dicky too!! He was so drunk (Bromberg probably scared the pants off Betts) he couldn't play at all. As a matter of fact, he couldn't even tune his guitar. To sum it up... GET THIS CD !!

No Chubby Thighs?,

Too bad they split these volumes up. On vinyl, this album included the ironic "Idol with the Golden Head" and the delectably bluesy instrumental "Chubby Thighs." Because neither this Volume (1) nor Volume 2 has all the original songs on one CD, it gets only 3 stars. Had they all been here, this would be a definite 5-star CD.

How Late'll Ya Play 'Til?, Vol. 1, Live [LIVE],

This piece is dated by language and references but remains constant in the display of versatility and range of style that Bromberg has mastered. His rendenitions of traditional blues tunes with a Dixieland treatment or a simple slide guitar demonstrates his comfort with himself, his material, and with a variety of musicians capable of leading him or being led. The man is the master of a variety of stringed instrument and very few musicians compare to him.

Once upon a time, I had this album in vinyl from a quaint little establishment in Rockford, Illinois called Toad Hall. They specialized in used vinyl and I managed to record said album on cassette tape. There were four sides to the original. The first record in the set had studio tracks and the second had live tracks. Well, imagine my surprise upon receiving the CD with only live tracks. However, all was not lost- the last two tracks on the CD made the album worth the price. I wonder if we could get a David Bromberg fan page going on Facebook or something...

I first heard Bromberg's music on a friend's album, and was wowed by I Will Not Be Your Fool. Bought the cassette and listened to it for years. But now its started to show its age and I decided to buy the CDWell, two CDs actually. They showed up yesterday and I eagerly opened them and gave a listen. Oh my. First of all, Fool has been edited, and the ending is not the same as the one on the cassette. Several lesser songs have been added so they could make this a 2 CD set. And there is something different about several of the songs, as if they substituted a different band for this recording (The cover says no, but it sounds quite different to me). I'm giving it 3 stars because I still love many of the songs, and if you've never heard Bromberg, you'll probably enjoy. But I'm gonna trade these in at my used record store, and see if I can find a used copy of the cassette. In the meantime, buyer beware!

Great album. It makes you want to get up and get those happy feet going. I saw him at St. Bonaventure University in the late 70's. One of the best concerts I have ever seen. Why only four stars? Not only did the nitwits break up a great double album, but Amazon doesn't let you sample the songs added to each of the cd's. It makes me think that I should just buy the software that allows me to copy vinyl LP's to cd instead of trying the additions. |
