COME ON WITH IT GIRL,
By Patricia L. Cole (Chicago, IL USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: On How Life Is (Audio CD)
I was shopping in a mall, heard this fab and sultry voice with the intoxicating beat. I had to know who is this? What is this song? Sounds like Boy George, Tina Turner, Billie Holiday, Rod Stewart! Who is this? A customer told me, "It's Macy Gray, singing I Try". I rushed to the closest CD store and purchased this jewel for myself. Little did I know I was in for a treat. This girl knows how to work her sexual lyrics; in Caligula and Sex-o-matic Venus Freak! Whooa, baby! See, I am a late forties woman, the kid stations put sex out on the table "lick the lips below your navel" too crass. But this lady, dresses up her sexual songs that gets the point across in a wordplay that's outta this world. Not only that, "Still" speaks to many women who stay in a bad relationship. She's soooo real. Her first cut, "Why didn't you call me", Yeah baby, I can relate. Her spiritual side boggles my mind. Tellin' God, "I can't wait to meet you." That should be played on some of the Christian radio stations. And "I Committed Murder" what skillful ideas she has! She's the bomb. I can't wait to see another release. COME ON WITH IT GIRL!

Great CD, I start my day with "I Try" or "Do Something",

On How Life Is a great CD. It deserves much more airplay than it is currently recieving. Her raspy voice can be compared to a variety of singer such as Billie Holliday, Tina Turner with a hint of Stevie Nicks. The songs are well constructed and the music is a cross between R&B, rock and roll from a wide range of eras. "Do Something" has modern '60s sound and "I Try" is a medium tempo ballard. "Caligua" has a catchy hook with it's "Beau doh doh dah" throughtout the chorus and matching percussions. Sex-O-Matic Venus Freak has a Mode Squad flava minus the sexual lyrics of course. I would also recomend seeing Macy live if you get the opportunity. She puts on a nice live performance.

Worth the extra for "Rather Hazy"....,
By
This review is from: On How Life Is (Audio CD)
Even though it's the bonus track, RATHER HAZY is the best track on this CD! If you have enough spare cash to pay this much for a CD, I thoroughly recommend paying extra for the bonus track. Alternatively, do what I did - buy the regular album, and the "Do Something" single, which also features the track "Rather Hazy".

ONLY ONE EXTRA TRACK ON IMPORT,
By A Customer
This review is from: On How Life Is (Audio CD)
Although this is called "Extra Tracks", it should have been called "Extra Track". This is a great cd, but be warned, before you shell out for one extra song. Its a cool song, but plural "Extra Tracks" would have been nice.

The whole CD is the bomb! When I first bought the CD for "I Try," which is song #4, I kept listening and the whole entire CD is just amazing! Her style is so different. I don't know what she will come out with next, but if it tops this one, everyone will be in for a big surprise! (sanron6@aol.com)

I've found my God, and her name's Macy,
By "dododododododododododo" (Redmond, Washington United States) - See all my reviews

This album is my favorite album of all time. I've loved it since the day I bought it, more than a year ago. Macy Gray's lyrics are so deep and moving, she gives me goosebumps every time I listen to it. This album has literally changed my life, she's let me see all the joy in life, and look past the infinate sadness. My favorite track is "A Moment to Myself," where Macy sings joyfully about her new, happy life. Another favorite is "The Letter," an up-beat song about suicide. If you only buy one album in your life time let it be this. However, only buy it if you are one who actually listens to the lyrics, because the beats are just pretty good. "On How Life Is" is a brilliant album, that talks about everything in life (abusive boyfriends [Still], murder [I've Commited Murder], etc.). It fittingly ends with "The Letter," where she kills herself.

Fantastic Album,

There are not many CDs where I like every single song, but this is one. It makes for great chill-out music. 'Rather Hazy' is a great mellow track for the end. It may only be one extra track, but more Macy is better Macy.

Rediscover your soul!,
By Elizabeth (Chicago, IL) - See all my reviews

Never having considered myself one to lean toward anything apart from the Indigo Girls/James Taylor genre, I was given this CD by a friend as requisite listening before he took me to her concert. "You've got to know the words before you go to the show" he told me. I sat down one evening and found I listened to it three times through! It made me feel empowered, sensual, rejuvenated. She's a phenomenal artist, and puts on a show you'll be raving about for weeks!
