Book Description

May 25, 2006
This comprehensive movement program uses the story of biological evolution as a tool to increase strength, flexibility, and body awareness. Readers learn to "unlearn" inherited bodily habits by embodying the many forms that life has expressed on Earth—from the single cell to the human being—and shifting their perception. Through this evolutionary movement, the body's native intelligence is revived and new movements can be learned, enabling the body to overcome chronic musculoskeletal complaints such as lower back, shoulder, and neck pain, and to meet whatever challenges it is faced with.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"The authors have provided us with a well thought-out and highly articulate voice of a moving scenario that enriches all of our lives."
Emilie Conrad, Founder of Continuum Movement

"Caryn and Kevin have written an easily accessible but potent book on the organic origins of movement patterns. Not just another therapeutic formula, this is work that seeks to lead us back to our deepest internal resources for self-awareness, self-regulation, and successful adaptation to our ever-shifting circumstances."
Deane Juhan, Author of Job's Body: A Handbook for Bodywork and Touched by the Goddess:The Physical, Psychological, and Spiritual Powers of Bodywork

"What does it really mean to move--to propel ourselves through space and time? What are sensation and awareness? This book invites you to a deep, expansive, and joyous ourney that will forever change your perspective on what it is to be alive."
James L. Oschman, Ph.D., Author of Energy Medicine: The Scientific Basis

"Kevin and Caryn lead us quietly into the depths of our being, exploring a unique somatic psychology that expands the value of movement far beyond the limited definition of "fitness" so prevalent today and toward the larger "fittingness" we desperately need to be fully human in the headlong folly of our twenty-first-century world."
Tom Myers, Certified Advanced Rolfer, founder of Kinesis Structural Integration School, and author of Anatomy Trains

"This renewed acquaintance with the body's deepest history moves the reader beyond the artificial separation of body and mind. Read it slowly, ponder, experiment with movements and positions, and ponder again as thought and movement intertwine and prove to be indivisible."
Mary Catherine Bateson, Ph.D., Cultural anthropologist and author of Willing to Learn: Passages of Personal Discovery and Composing a Life

"A fascinating and practical book that speaks to us with exceptional clarity about the complex and intertwining themes of evolution, perception, movement, and meaning. The esthetic sensibility of the writing transmits the depth of the authors' direct experience and contagiously inspires us to explore."
Susan Harper, International teacher of Continuum Movement and creator of Em'oceans and Sensations Trainings

This book gifts those who read it with an understanding of organic evolutionary somatic movement. I would highly recommend it for movement therapists, yoga instructors, dancers, or anyone interested in movement arts. It is a joy to read, and instantly usable for teachers, with great photos, well-written text, and creative exercises.

i purchased this book hoping to get a psychological study. the "Look Inside" option showed the introduction which provided a very interesting beginning to what seemed to be a psychological study. instead, it turned out to only contain a small percentage of such a study and a large percentage of exercises. this was not made apparent in either the item description or the "Look Inside" option provided on the product page. i shared a photo of some of the exercise images and hope they are available for customers interested in purchasing this item.

i rated the item 4 stars because it was a lovely volume presenting its contents in a clear and organized manner. for anyone seeking the physical application and possible readjustment of their own body movement, i believe this would be a good purchase.
