Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Finn ( How to Visit a Museum ), a photographer whose pictures of sculpture have appeared in over 25 books, explains in words and 70 photographs what to look for in any piece of sculpture: finely crafted details; textures inherent in raw materials, as well as those fabricated or refined by an artist; and the form of the whole, alive with emotional "tension," as seen from various angles. Finn advises developing a "tactile-feeling eye" and exercising it whenever possible, "in effect touching . . . with your eyes rather than with your hand"--though if a museum guard is nodding off, a discreet laying-on of hands is also urged. The author's survey of individual works and ways of seeing them, from classical to post-modern and Greek to East Indian, is weak in words but strong in images. When generalizing about the meaning of sculpture in the abstract, Finn fails to convey the special impact of his photographs ("What is remarkable about details in a great figurative work of sculpture is that they ennoble the human form"). But his pictures of nude figures are outstanding, conveying the warmth of flesh in stone.

This review is from: How to Look At Sculpture (Paperback)
As a sculptor of humanitarians I know that how we look at a sculpture is not just important for us as scuptors but also as the people you hope to draw into your work. This is a wonderful look from a professionals eye at tips on how to look and see deeper into the sculptor's work. Hope you take time to read this and look at this form of artistic expression in a new way. Thank you Mr. Finn. Meera Censor

I love this book because the photos show great detail giving you a real sense of the piece. I also like the text but being a visual person this book, although small, is packed with gems of sculpture. Love it.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Photographer's Passion, August 23, 2006
This review is from: How to Look At Sculpture (Paperback)
David Finn is one of the world's finest photographers of sculpture. In this book he articulates in words what he has demonstrated through his photographs over the years: the sensuous appeal of figurative sculpture. His passion for his subject shines through his words as well as his well reproduced photographs. "How to Look" is a delightful introduction to sculpture.
