"Hundreds of Heads" are better than one., January 19, 2006
This review is from: How to Lose 9,000 lbs. (or Less): Advice from 516 Dieters Who Did (Hundreds of Heads Survival Guides) (Paperback)
I recently got a physical from my new primary care physician. To my dismay, I found out that I have borderline high blood pressure and an elevated cholesterol count. The doctor suggested that I lose 20 pounds and eat more fruits and vegetables (he recommended the DASH diet to help reduce my hypertension). As usual, I turned to books and the Web for further consul.
Most of the health-related resources I consulted were based on a single person's opinion. However, "How to Lose 9,000 lbs. (or less)" is different. It's part of a series called "Hundreds of Heads," where everyday people contribute a couple sentences of advice on a given subject. This particular book contains hints from hundreds of folks who have lost weight (each quote has their name, where they live, and how much weight they lost). The subject matter is broken down into chaptered categories, such as getting motivated to lose weight, dealing with temptation, and the success (or failure) of various diet plans. In addition, each category has related empirical weight loss information gathered from various sources (nutrition facts, the Body Mass Index, and so on). Each source is listed in the back of the book in case you want to explore them further.
Of course, some of the opinions are contradictory, and others may not apply to your situation (for example, I haven't had gastric bypass surgery). Even so, I was encouraged on my journey to lose weight. I've improved my diet and added more calorie-burning exercises in ways similar to some of the book's contributors. After a month, my pants are looser and I have more energy. I recommend "How to Lose 9,000 lbs. (or less)" to anyone looking for a more personal level of weight-loss encouragement. Just make sure you get your doctor's advice as well.

I have read many diet books and been on many programs. For a person who has knowledge of dieting there is nothing new here. The people cited in this book have lost zero to over 100 pounds. The book consists of small paragraphs of advice from "dieters"
It has 12 chapters from "Why lose weight" to "Good Stuff That Doesn't Fit Anywhere Else" (in the book).
Some "wisdom" in the book: Don't buy cookies and candy at the store so you aren't tempted at home. p72 Eat with chopsticks it slows you down. p174 Eat tons of popcorn and skip the butter. p92 No Krispy Kremes under any circumstances. p73.
If you need pearls of wisdom such as these, buy the book.

Perfect Present, January 4, 2006

It's not often you can give someone else a book on dieting without offending them. But this book did the trick. My sister is not obese, but she has always been on and off diets ... and so I gave her this book, thinking the title and the picture on the front would put a fun spin on it. Turns out she loves it! Says there's lots of good advice, and it's fun to read.
