I have read many diet books and been on many programs. For a person who has knowledge of dieting there is nothing new here. The people cited in this book have lost zero to over 100 pounds. The book consists of small paragraphs of advice from "dieters"
It has 12 chapters from "Why lose weight" to "Good Stuff That Doesn't Fit Anywhere Else" (in the book)...

4.0 out of 5 stars "Hundreds of Heads" are better than one., January 19, 2006
This review is from: How to Lose 9,000 lbs. (or Less): Advice from 516 Dieters Who Did (Hundreds of Heads Survival Guides) (Paperback)
I recently got a physical from my new primary care physician. To my dismay, I found out that I have borderline high blood pressure and an elevated cholesterol count. The doctor suggested that I lose 20 pounds and eat more fruits and vegetables (he recommended the DASH diet to help reduce my hypertension). As usual, I turned to books and the Web for further consul.

Most of the health-related resources I consulted were based on a single person's opinion. However, "How to Lose 9,000 lbs. (or less)" is different. It's part of a series called "Hundreds of Heads," where everyday people contribute a couple sentences of advice on a given subject. This particular book contains hints from hundreds of folks who have lost weight (each quote has their name, where they live, and how much weight they lost). The subject matter is broken down into chaptered categories, such as getting motivated to lose weight, dealing with temptation, and the success (or failure) of various diet plans. In addition, each category has related empirical weight loss information gathered from various sources (nutrition facts, the Body Mass Index, and so on). Each source is listed in the back of the book in case you want to explore them further.

Of course, some of the opinions are contradictory, and others may not apply to your situation (for example, I haven't had gastric bypass surgery). Even so, I was encouraged on my journey to lose weight. I've improved my diet and added more calorie-burning exercises in ways similar to some of the book's contributors. After a month, my pants are looser and I have more energy. I recommend "How to Lose 9,000 lbs. (or less)" to anyone looking for a more personal level of weight-loss encouragement. Just make sure you get your doctor's advice as well.

Some "wisdom" in the book: Don't buy cookies and candy at the store so you aren't tempted at home. p72 Eat with chopsticks it slows you down. p174 Eat tons of popcorn and skip the butter. p92 No Krispy Kremes under any circumstances. p73.

If you need pearls of wisdom such as these, buy the book.

It's not often you can give someone else a book on dieting without offending them. But this book did the trick. My sister is not obese, but she has always been on and off diets ... and so I gave her this book, thinking the title and the picture on the front would put a fun spin on it. Turns out she loves it! Says there's lots of good advice, and it's fun to read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great sound 'bites' in this book. Wonderful advice on how to lose weight., January 4, 2006
This review is from: How to Lose 9,000 lbs. (or Less): Advice from 516 Dieters Who Did (Hundreds of Heads Survival Guides) (Paperback)
I read a few tips every day and they've been very helpful. I learned a great tip - to try cooking with spaghetti squash instead of pasta - and love it! I never would have thought of that - and it's delicious...

This book is filled with solid advice, inspiring stories of weight-loss and a some funny tales, too. I don't know that I'll lose 9,000 Lbs...but I'm certain I'll lose a few thanks to this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Share the Wealth, August 8, 2006
This review is from: How to Lose 9,000 lbs. (or Less): Advice from 516 Dieters Who Did (Hundreds of Heads Survival Guides) (Paperback)
This is the first "hundreds of heads" book I've read, and the format certainly provides lots of somethings for everyone. The most beneficial aspect to me is the fact that there are comments from so many people that there is no way some of the advice won't be just right for you. I also enjoyed the good mix of humor; my favorite comment was on page 51 where a lady was talking about the problem with buying diet books is you don't know if they work for you until you try them, and if they don't, "that's $20 you could have spent on ice cream." You know, that's just how life is. If we take ourselves too seriously we'll just drive ourselves nuts. I also agree with the other reviewer who said this was a good book to give as a gift without offending.

4.0 out of 5 stars Over 500 friends rooting for you!, June 30, 2006
This review is from: How to Lose 9,000 lbs. (or Less): Advice from 516 Dieters Who Did (Hundreds of Heads Survival Guides) (Paperback)
I enjoyed reading How to Lose 9,000 lbs. (or less). If you are reading this you probably struggle with your weight, and you know that not every diet works for everyone. These are real people with real weight issues giving you their best advice.

This book is like having everyone you know in a room; they are all rooting for you and telling you how they lost the weight. You can pick and choose what you'll do to loose the weight.

The book is also filled with all sorts of interesting facts about food and weight lose. It's an interesting read and I even found myself laughing a few times. I would suggest that anyone needing to loose 5 or 500 lbs. grab a copy of this book.

Diet books come and go....each with some new fad and theory...but after a few weeks they are usually cast aside, ready for E-Bay. This book is a great surprise. It's really helpful. It has real life-tested tips that I can carry with me no matter the current diet craze. The best advice is always that from folks who have been there. This book is chock full with those kinds of suggestions, ideas, information, from people who are fighting the same battle. It's fun and encouranging to know that I am not alone. I feel smarter and emboldened after breezing through this great guide. I'm feeling 9,000 pounds lighter already.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Suggestions To Win The Battle Of The Bulge, June 30, 2006
This review is from: How to Lose 9,000 lbs. (or Less): Advice from 516 Dieters Who Did (Hundreds of Heads Survival Guides) (Paperback)
It's true. There really are hundreds and hundreds of weight loss tips that can add up to weight loss. "How to Lose 9,000 lbs.(or less)" tells you what has worked for the "experts". In this case, the experts are not nutritionists, professionals, or researchers, but are the ordinary people who have found ways to lose weight and are generous enough to share them with you. The sections on eating out and improvising to get in your exercise are outstanding. If you're looking for lots of down-to-earth tips and need motivation to get started on your weight loss program, this is the book for you! Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Diet Reference Guide, July 26, 2006
This review is from: How to Lose 9,000 lbs. (or Less): Advice from 516 Dieters Who Did (Hundreds of Heads Survival Guides) (Paperback)
It takes a village to raise a child and for some of us, it takes a village to lose weight. How To Lose 9000 lbs. (or Less) has provided over 500 helpmates from across the nation and Canada.

Having struggled with my weight since childhood, it was great to read advice from real people, with real weight issues, and real weight loss challenges. If you need to be motivated without being judged, this book is your companion. It's like having your own OA meeting, in your home, with friends that understand.

My suggestion: Purchase this book so that you will always have a weight loss buddy!
