5.0 out of 5 stars Outrageously funny! Waiting for the sequel.
At first I was skeptical of Tom Arnold as an author, but after a few recommendations of "How I Lost 5 Pounds in 6 Years" my thoughts have changed.
Tom Arnold's writing technique is wonderful and complements his humor and honesty. I found myself laughing hysterically and moved to tears with a turn of the page.

3.0 out of 5 stars A second rate book from a second rate actor.
I liked this book because it was a page-turner. I hated this book because it really wasn't funny or interesting or intriguing. It's not a bad book, just a book worthy of Tom Arnold's semi-celebrity.

First off, it's small, quick, and fluid and very readable. That's always a huge plus. Also, a few of the stories are fun, like the parking war with the Seinfield cast...

I found this book absolutely wonderful. Smartly funny and also heart-tuggingly sensitive. Tom's quick wit is only to be matched by his willingness to give the reader a rare look into one of Hollywood's truly good guys heart. He lays it all out for his "child" yet to be born... the good, the bad and the hilarious. I highly recomend this book to anyone who loves to laugh and cry all in the same night. Well written and easy to identify with. I hope Tom's family and friends appreciate how lucky they are to have this special man in thier lives- the giving and the sharing of his time, money and support alone shows how much Tom cares for not only those who are close to him but also those in need. Bravo Mr. Arnold. You deserve all the best in life and I thank you for the experience of sharing in your life through your words. Your unborn child has a great daddy!!

5.0 out of 5 stars I thought it was great and laughed out loud many times, February 23, 2003

I do agree with the previous reviewer that the book jumped all over the place - but you get the feeling that Tom is like that in real life. He probably jumps from topic to topic in conversation! I also wished he had put photos of Roseanne and his second wife instead of so many similar photos of his current wife. There are many touching moments as well as laught out loud moments. His insight into relationships was very knowledgeable and he has good advice. He seems like a person who would make a good friend and people are lucky to have him in their life!

Tom Arnold is not only one of the best comedians around, but an amazing author! From the second I picked up the book and started reading it I knew I wasn't going to be able to put it down. I went from laughing to crying to laughing in minutes. He talks about the hardships of life (his life) and sprinkles every sentence with humor that will leave you in stiches. The book is emotional, sincere and hilarious! He has so many stories to tell that will amaze you. I don't want to give away too much so buy the book. I read it in one night and I want more!!! I highly recommend you buying the book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Move Over, Shakespeare, an Arnold's Pushin' the Pen!, November 13, 2002
By
muramakim (Tucson, Arizona USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: How I Lost 5 Pounds in 6 Years: An Autobiography (Hardcover)
Tom Arnold's _How I Lost Five Pounds in Six Years_ is just what this family needs! This tome is about the best exposure our wonderful and tight-knit little clan is going to get, so let's build on it!

I had just finished Scott Spencer's delightfully humorous and understated novel, _Endless Love_. After that insouciant romp through the flowers, I wasn't in the mood for another lighthearted comedy/romance. So, I went in search of something that looked deep within a man's tortured psyche. Yes, the characters in Spencer's novel added laughter and smiles to my day, but I wanted and needed something dark, overbearing, and consuming (obviously, something Spencer will never be known for). For this reason, I took a calculated risk on Tom Arnold's autobiography.

Within a few pages, _How I Lost Five Pounds in Six Years_ quickly confirmed that Arnold's book would be a rare find. Most reviewers found that they could immediately understand their own sub-human and primitive nature through the sullen memories of Tom's tortured childhood. One reviewer spoke for us all when he wrote, "[when] I read about how Tom spent his youth [killing pigs in a slaughterhouse], I couldn't help but connect his dehumanizing job with all of the inner feelings of hatred and moribund humanity that I had built-up through the years." It appears that thanks to Tom's willingness to put it all on the line, almost everyone can find new ways to scale life's toughest ramparts.

As a fan of hog carcass splitters and "bung droppers," nothing made me realize, so quickly, that we Arnolds have a lot in common when it comes time to slaughter the pigs. We can better understand our family, our heritage, and, in fact, each other, through Tom's courageous attempts to bring the world around him into focus.

5.0 out of 5 stars If Hemmingway Had Been From Iowa, November 11, 2002
This review is from: How I Lost 5 Pounds in 6 Years: An Autobiography (Hardcover)
If Hemmingway had been from Iowa and he had married Roseanne, he might have been able to write this book. Otherwise, leave it to Tom Arnold. Tom speaks from the heart and he speaks the truth. Anyone who can't emphasize with Arnold's lessons learned isn't human. This multifaceted 'tour de force' leaves other celebrity 'tell alls' in the lurch. Why does Julia Louis-Dreyfus hate Tom? What did he tell Roseanne right before the national anthem? How low is his sperm count? You'll never know unless you pick up this magical tome. It's a perfect book for Christmas, Chanukah, Kwanza and Pagan New Year.

4.0 out of 5 stars Even the reviews are funny and insightful, November 14, 2002

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: How I Lost 5 Pounds in 6 Years: An Autobiography (Hardcover)
If we judge a book by its cover, we know that the title is hilarious and that the insider "reviews" are quite insightful. You see, Tom is a Hollywood guy. He just wants to fit in ( like everyone else in this town ) and he admits it openly and with the conviction. He finished several 12-step programs, he's been divorced more times than anyone south of the Mason-Dixon line can count, and he even changed his religion and his political affiliation when he thought it would bring him closer to people in Hollywood. Well, it has. Tom should be Mayor of this city. He is Mr. Hollywood. In fact, just look at the "reviews" from the denizens of Tinsel Town and you can actually tell who Tom's real friends are and who's faking it. For example: Steve Tisch honestly says he'll never read the book. Friend. However, Kathie Lee Gifford pretends to have read the book. Not-a-friend. Don Roos actually sat down to write the review, but he probably didn't read the book. Sort-of-friend. Bill Mahr probably scanned the book and chuckled once or twice. He has his own problems. Friend. Craig Kilborn didn't read the book and admits it. Friend. Now... Arnold Schwarzenegger, bright man that he is, wouldn't be caught dead reading Tom's book in case Maria found out. Tom is to Mr. Universe what Bonzo was to Ronald Regan. Simply put, Tom represents everything that the Terminator abhors. His assistant even had the temerity to plug TRUE LIES in the review. Not-a-friend-but-finds-Tom-amusing-at-celebrity-functions. If you wish to study the kind of personality it takes to feel at home in Hollywood, I think this book will be of great service. Everything in LA is ass-backwards and nothing is real. But every now and then a celebrity wears their heart on their sleeve and it isn't a prosthetic appliance. Tom Arnold is probably that kind of guy. There's a good chance that I'll buy and read his book. And if I could rent him for parties, I would.

4.0 out of 5 stars Best comedian bio I've read, April 12, 2006
This review is from: How I Lost 5 Pounds in 6 Years: An Autobiography (Hardcover)
My husband picked this up for me in a bargain book store. I was like, ehh Tom Arnold... However, I read the first few pages and I was already smiling. I loved how he can be vengeful of people who wronged him and sweet while doing it at the same time. I read this a long time ago but it still holds up in my head that I laughed like crazy, I remeber him playing a prank on the Elaine from Seinfeld and a funny altercation between the two. After I read it I wanted to see all the movies he's in. I've read George Lopez, Rodney Dangerfield ( pretty good though), that wayans guy. This book's better, and funny. Too short.
