5.0 out of 5 stars One of the Best Books on Lowering LDL Cholesterol January 5, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
"Studies have shown when you increase your exercise and modify your diet your levels of LDL go down and your HDL levels go up." ~ (Locations 224-27)

Carter McGuire has a very cute and creative way of describing LDL and HDL. For the first time I finally understood the reasons for lowering LDL cholesterol and raising HDL cholesterol. Carter McGuire is a natural teacher and makes the whole subject of cholesterol so much more fun.

This book also explains what triglycerides are. I did not get that tested the last time I gave blood and will have to ask my doctor to order that test in the future.

I found the information on why smokers are at high risk for a heart attack to be very interesting. The information on drinking alcohol however did not come with any warnings. I've read may times that drinking alcohol can increase your risk for cancer. So I think the risks outweigh the benefits.

The section on supplements could have been longer. There was no mention of Cardioviva which I'm looking into taking.

Also this book could have listed a lot more foods that raise HDL. Here they are for those of you who are interested: avocado, oatmeal, olive oil, nuts, Omega 3's, garlic, beans, lentils, fish, green tea, pears, pistachios, peanut butter, bananas and spinach.

I'm glad I read this book because it gave me a visual picture of what is happening inside my body. Therefore I recommend it highly. I wish doctors could hand out a booklet with this book's information in it to patients. It might convince some less active patients to get exercising. It surely has motivated me.

With my Cholesterol having gone up slightly I am now trying to get it down naturally, no pills etc. Shouldn't be hard but needed to know exactly what I was dealing with and this little book does do that. Very clearly explains good and bad Cholesterol etc., and the foods that are bad and good. A very clear and good start. No recipes though.

5.0 out of 5 stars A nice concise book January 20, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is not a lengthy book and it is written by a layman in laymen's terms. However, I like the conciseness of it - the author imparts good information and makes some good points without a lot of medical mumbo-jumbo. If you just learned that cholesterol is a problem you need to worry about, this book is an excellent starting point to get the basic facts.

Excellent. also liked how he suggested making the changes slowly. I've tried lots of things in my life and I've also found when you try to make too many changes too quickly that I seldom stick with them. I give this how to lower cholesterol book 2 thumbs up.
