5.0 out of 5 stars Great advice, better than wasting money on film school!, January 30, 2009
By
This review is from: How to Make Money Making Movies: The Secrets of Becoming a Profitable Filmmaker (Paperback)
I've been in the film business for 10 years and wish this book had been written back when I started! It's practical real-deal advice, not unusable film school crap. Making independent films that make money is nearly impossible in this day-and-age, so I reccommed this book to anyone that plans to invest their time and money to do it. Otherwise you will most likely fail and become bitter and jaded like the reviewer below!

5.0 out of 5 stars Valuable Info for filmmakers and wannabe's, May 4, 2009
This review is from: How to Make Money Making Movies: The Secrets of Becoming a Profitable Filmmaker (Paperback)
This book contains some great information about making movies (especially low budget ones)geared for those who not only want to make good movies, but make a profit doing it. I have read books on low budget independent filmmaking and producing, and most are centered on making your "masterpiece" film without much, or any, concern for the market place. This book offers a much more sound business plan, and also addresses making horror films, sci-fi, thrillers etc., not just art films aimed at winning Sundance. There is also advice from other producers like Pierre David, who is intelligent, a real student of the game, and successful example of the making low budget movies that make money.
I have produced a couple of small films which made some money, and I assure you, there is lots of very good advice in this book for those of us making movies, and those who would like to.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Reality Check Even Though a Bit Self-Serving., April 19, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: How to Make Money Making Movies: The Secrets of Becoming a Profitable Filmmaker (Paperback)
The book turned out to be better than I had thought.
I was anticipating a big print, few pages to each chapter, few chapters, and a simplistic vanity piece. It turned out more a slice of how a low lever distributor looks at independent movie product and how it can be sold. First of all, Tanya York is not a filmmaker...She's a businesswoman. She becomes brutally honest about what it takes to make any money at the low end of the movie making business. That's where few people, if anyone at all, makes any money. York Entertainment has found a particular niche in the marketplace and Tanya claims she can make you money if you follow her formula. She has many case studies to back that up...but you might not want to always be making horror - action movies. If not, she says you don't have much of a chance in the low budget game. I did appreciate her brutal honesty, realizing much of what she says is rather self serving in how she can help the aspiring filmmaker. Forgiving her that, there was still much valuable information and worth the price.
